As a freelance architect, one is perhaps more free to engage with opportunities than when one is an employee at someone else’s firm; you can afford to take risks and pursue novel solutions to interesting problems. All of this feeds into developing an indigenous language for one’s own practice and creative expression. As architecture is firmly rooted in real world parameters, it is imperative that one understands the context within which the practice is taking place. This is not only restricted to physical parameters/contexts such as the environment and the terrain but also abstract concerns such as the desires of the client and their hopes and expectations. However, it’s not always easy. There are days when one does not want to deal with each and every trivial thing, opting to only pay attention to the creative ‘good’ stuff. However, it is important to remember that these so called ‘trivialities’ are necessary to the creative process. This presentation by Murtaza Bilal Ahmad is about striking that balance and the practice of architecture in general.
