Candie Printz

Teacher, SISD in El Paso United States

Candace couldn’t help but admire her mother as she sketched family portraits with ease. Her mom was her first art teacher who paved the way to who she would ultimately become. After having a rough start with financial and family issues, she decided to get her G.E.D. after dropping out of school at the age of twelve. This lack of education at a young age made her hunger for knowledge more rather than resist it. Her aunt, Janet Graham, who was an educator of thirty years, inspired her to teach. She completed two years at community college, where she excelled, and then moved on to work towards an art education degree at University of Texas at El Paso. Knowing that art, in conjunction with helping people, would make her happy, she quickly gained her first teaching job at El Dorado High School in Socorro Independent School District. Candace is now working towards a Master’s degree in art education at Texas Tech University. She has gone from humble beginnings to curating art shows at UTEP, traveling all over the world with students, writing Texas education standards in Austin, being honored in Washington D.C. for the success of her student’s, bringing environmental change to El Paso along with Chelsea Clinton by winning a national contest, being chosen as an H.E.B. Excellence in Education finalist, being chosen for the UTEP Mentor Teacher Award, and being selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities recipient to study art and write curriculum in Rome, Italy. Candace will continue to expose her students to real-world issues in hopes that they, through art and action, will create positive change.

@ VOL 14 ON OCT 15, 2016

With the It’s Your World project, Candace Printz and her students aim to challenge how people think about their environment, art, and the individuals in their community. Chelsea Clinton wrote a book, “It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!” that focuses on positive impacts within your community. In the spirit of this book, Candace and other teachers across the country submitted projects which would improve their community.
