general manager, The Port Theatre society
Native Vancouver Islander, Bruce, began his career in the Arts, as Assist. Tech. Dir. at the McPherson Playhouse in Victoria. While so many moved west for Expo 86, Bruce moved east to Thunder Bay to open the new 1500 seat auditorium as Head of Lighting followed by enough time in Toronto. Bruce then moved to the Banff Centre for the Arts as an instructor in the Lighting Department. In 1988, Bruce joined The Judith Marcuse Dance Company as Lighting Designer, touring throughout Canada and abroad. Bruce’s passion for production and lighting design began while studying design at Goldsmiths College in London England. 1990 moved Bruce to the Belfry Theatre as Production Manager for the exciting, formative years renovating the amazing facility. Bruce has continued to design for Opera, Dance and Theatre. In 1994 Bruce took a year sabbatical from the Belfry Theatre to be Senior Coordinator of Special events with the Commonwealth Games culminating in being Director of Production for the Queens “Royal Gala”. Bruce returned to the Belfry Theatre for four more very rewarding years, before moving to Nanaimo as Technical Director with the Port Theatre, prior to its 1998 opening. Over the last 18 years at the Port Theatre, Bruce has formed a strong collaboration with touring artists, artist’s agents and the presenting network across B.C. and Canada. In 2006 Bruce became General Manager for the Port Theatre Society taking on Artistic Programming in 2010. Being involved in building operational and administrative systems while developing and adapting the Artistic Vision for the future has been extremely rewarding.
Bruce is very excited to be leading the Port Theatre team into a capital fundraising campaign to complete the community vision of a purpose built performing arts centre. With the support of The City of Nanaimo through City Council, The Port Theatre Society has been given a rare opportunity to make this dream, a reality for our community. Imagine the unimagined….
