Redesign a School

Architect Pascale Sablan is sharing her experience promoting diversity and including children in the design process of redesigning a school in Haiti after the earthquake. Following the international building code in the design she is also quantifying the sustainability of the product and encouraging the audience to share their passion and knowledge with children.

Alexandra Fine is devoted to proving that sex can be equally as pleasurable for both men and women and aiding that assertion with creative, well-designed and flawlessly-executed sexual innovations. Eva, the first of these inventions, quickly became the #1 crowdfunded sex toy — catapulting Alex and her business partner, Janet, into the spotlight for their uniquely engineered couples’ vibrator aimed at closing the pleasure gap. She is also generally into fun and happiness.
.GIFs: an Emotive Vocabulary
Sha Hwang takes us through the history of .gifs, and their use in society, as an emotive vocabulary for current events, sports, and every day life.
Sha is an information designer and technologist based mostly in Brooklyn. A failed architect and an accidental entrepreneur, Sha has designed and built work for clients such as the New York Times, MTV, Flickr, and Adobe. Previously, Sha worked at Stamen Design and later cofounded the company Movity, which was acquired by Trulia. Sha spends his nights trawling Tumblr and printing gifs as Gifpop and his days working with Nava to improve healthcare.gov and other parts of government.

Emma Exley traces the history of Africa's last colony, the Western Sahara, located on the continent's northern coast. Through images of traditional Sahrawi architecture and culture, we learn about the challenges of desert living, and how something as small as a cup of tea has massive significance in the every day life of the Sahrawi people.
Emma Exley is a creative designer, former art educator, and diving enthusiast. After first discovering PechaKucha Night in Chicago in 2007, it was only a matter of time before she founded the Brooklyn chapter in 2014.

Mowatt has been been working on Vir2oso for a year since feeling great frustration from the UK's uncompromising education system which did not provide ample space for creativity and exploration of self.

It is easy to grasp the concept that communication is a two-way street but how many of us really put the theory into practice? How easily do we fall on the default of just trying to put our point across, specially if we think about education?
Mark Kawakami is passionate about teaching and also describes himself as a failed comedian. In The Teacher Who Learned to Listen from PechaKucha Night Maastricht Vol. 31, he shared what conclusion he came to over the years of teaching.

While teaching yoga and dance in public schools, she developed the Bija approach - which strives to create a fulfilling and engaging educational experience.
Lauren has danced with internationally acclaimed ballet companies including San Francisco Ballet and New York City Ballet, and holds a BA from New School.

Mehdi Doumi is from Algeria and England, studied biomedical engineering, and is a technical leader in Research and Innovation at L’Oreal USA - researching human perception of cosmetic products. He has been part of NPO Ligo Project, promoting science in U.S. culture through humor and videography. He also enjoys carpentry, improv, and drawing satirical cartoons. Over the last 4 years he has committed himself to creating abstract artwork to any K-12 educator across the USA. He hopes that each art piece stimulates student curiosity about math and science topics, especially in a challenging teaching environment.

The PKN Sendai Team is Safe
It took a while, but we've finally gotten word from the organizers of PechaKucha Night in Sendai -- the hardest hit area following the March 11 quake -- and they are all safe. Led by Daisuke Suzuki of Hiroto Suzuki Architects & Associates, we've been told that all the people who work at the office are safe, but some of them have lost their homes. The damage to the city is not as bad as near the coast, but there are many damaged buildings and homes. In a coincidence that we still have a hard time believing, they told us that they went to view a potential venue just two days before the earthquake, and that they were planning to have their first PKN on April 16, which is the day we are holding our Global PechaKucha Day - Inspire Japan event. The PKN Sendai team is hoping to participate in the global event somehow, although for now finding a venue is of course an issue. We'll keep everyone posted as we find out more.

Reexamining an Abandoned Amusement Park, Teaching Kids How to Deal with Disabilities, and Guerilla Projecting in Providence
Presentations A presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 15) by Anthony Spinello and Augustina Woodgate about a project in Berlin called Kulturpark, taking place in an abandoned amusement park. Here's more on the project from the official website:In the Treptower Park forest in East Berlin, along the Spreeriver, there is an abandoned amusement park. The park, originally called Kulturpark Planterwald, was built in 1969 by the GDR and was a rare site for Soviet amusement and attraction. After the fall of the wall, the park became the family-owned Spreepark and suffered challenges of access, attendance, and economy. In 2001, the park closed from capital collapse. Ever since, visitors have regularly traversed the fence to explore this jungle of broken thrill machines. In June 2012, Kulturpark will explore the poetics and potential of these recent ruins, building upon the unique energy of Berlin’s urban, social, cultural, and political landscapes.Marina Potanina is the president of a charity foundation called To Kids About Kids. In her presentation (in Russian, from PKN Moscow Vol. 12) she talks about the project, and the creation of an animated series about school life for a group of kids, with one of the main characters being a girl in a wheelchair. In Russia, there are no books, TV, or other examples of adequate communication with people with disabilities. Marina believes that if we start by talking to kids about these issues, that our society will be changed. Barney is a street artist, and in his presentation (in Spanish, from PKN Mendoza Vol. 2) he talks about about the works he's produced in the streets of Mendoza, and why he does it. Richard Borbridge has an idea, and it involves the complete transformation of publication consultation. He calls it Public Realm 2.0, and describes it in his presentation (from PKN Toronto Vol. 16). Landscapes in Australia (and Beyond), the Mississippi Goddam Play, and Teaching Kids Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship
Presentations Christian Fletcher is a landscape photographer who photographs not only the beautiful South West of Australia but is now expanding his portfolio to include the rest of Australia and locations around the world. His presentation (from PKN Dunsborough Vol. 5) covers a new photography collaboration, exhibition, and workshop that is coming up in the near future. How did Jonathan Norton get out of writing a 20-page assignment? He promised a 100-page play instead, based on the Nina Simone song "Mississippi Goddam." Here's the story (from PKN Dallas Vol. 10). As we find out in this presentation (in Ukrainian, from PKN Kyiv Vol. 9), Kids-Coins is an educational project -- held inside and outside school -- that teaches children and teenagers the basics of financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Sergey Bidenko and Irina Zolotarevych -- co-authors of the "Kids-Coins" projects -- are experienced business coaches who have implemented 37 training and educational programs for adults and youth. Everybody is a Teacher
Truth, knowledge, and expertise don't come purely from the brain. Everyone has something to teach. In today's Presentation of the Day, "Everybody is a Teacher" from PKN Toronto Vol. 25, Courtney Lawrence speaks of a moment that changed her life: she was taught a deep and valuable lesson from her special-needs sister. Courtney realized that there is a wealth of knowledge to be acquired from those who are not experts or specialists. Her life changed dramatically from that point on: she now works as a consumer insight consultant and helps businesses to understand the fact that their customers have something to teach them as well.
Multicoloured Virtual Team: How to Manage It?
How to make remote teams work? Maryna Trepova, partner in Siegel HR in Ukraine and CIS, business trainer, Siegel Human Resource in Kiev, made a brilliant presentation "Multicoloured Virtual Team: How to Manage It" from PKN Dnipropetrovsk IT::Education. All employees were divided by psychological typologies, and each was assigned with a color. And each color possess different social roles in teams, communication tools and resources that it uses.
English = Time + Tenacity + Tears
“English is a frankenstein's monster. It's a hodgepodge abomination of rules that we break all the time.” In English = Time + Tenacity + Tears from PechaKucha Night Tokyo’s 133rd Volume, student and literary enthusiast Ṣeyi Adebanjo, discusses her frustration with the “global language”. The real world is full of puzzles, all of which are more or less systematic. To her the English language itself is the most complex puzzle of all. Though she found learning the convoluted language to be a challenge, her tenacity as both a bibliophile and writer eventually paid off; the end product was worth it.
