PechaKucha at 17th Sydney Biennale

Some great news coming out of Sydney today, with artistic director David Elliott unveiling some of the highlights from this year's Sydney Biennale (May 12 to August 1). Part of the reveal is that the event will be partnering up with PechaKucha for a series of nights, to be held at the SuperDeluxe@Artspace, a temporary venue that will act as an offshoot of Tokyo's very own SuperDeluxe, the birth place of PechaKucha.

17th Biennale of Sydney Identity

As we've mentioned a few times already, PechaKucha is a proud participant of this year's 17th Biennale of Sydney, both in terms of providing a regular series of PK events throughout the duration of the event (which goes until August 1), and with the inclusion of a temporary SuperDeluxe event space -- for those who don't know, SuperDeluxe is home to PKN in Tokyo, and also where it all started. We bring this up because the Creative Review blog has posted an extensive look at the identity for the festival, created by Barnbrook, as well as the event catalogue.

Love an Old House

"Nothing is more painful to me than the sight of an abandoned old house..." David Dominé believes that old houses are like old people - if you listen to them, they'll have a story to tell. He began writing books about old houses in the neighborhood, bringing to the forefront their colorful and interesting pasts, and in "Love an Old House" from PKN Louisville Vol. 11, you'll hear a few of those stories.

A New Picture House

"Cinema can make sense of history, distort memories, and shape time."In A New Picutre House from Huddersfield, Vol. 11, John Harrison from Studio Dekka talks about the creation of Dewsbury's New Picture House. In the spirit of the James Joyce's first Cinema, Volta, established in 1909 in Dublin, where showing obscure Italian arthouse films was pushing the envelope of what cinema could mean, Harrison and 15 cohorts took it upon themselves to open a new picture house where they too would push the expectations of film. In this unique presentation, he shares his story, and the stories of others who share his vision. Get some popcorn!

The Chicago House Sound

"The kick drum went through my chest, the bass line came up through the floor, the high hats and cymbals came fizzing from above ... when the smoke machine cleared, there were rich people, poor people, black, white, straight, gay ...and I thought, 'these are my people now, this is my music'."In The Chicago House Sound from PechaKucha Night Chicago Vol. 36, IDEO's Neil Stevenson went on a quest to find the roots of House Music that, during its evolution from New York to Chicago and then in its momentum across Europe, he fell in love with.
