In 31 Days Under the Sea from PechaKucha Night Brooklyn Vol. 1, Fabien Cousteau discusses how his family's background inspired his newest project, Mission 31. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the monumental legacy left by Fabien’s grandfather, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Mission 31 continues the dream of creating the first ocean floor habitats for humans and leading a team of ocean explorers on the first attempt to live and work underwater.

George Boorujy was born and bred in New Providence New Jersey, and now lives in Brooklyn, along with almost everyone else. He is represented by P.P.O.W. gallery in New York, and teaches at the School of Visual Arts.

Bringing a Big Boat Back to Life

Liz McEnaney is an urban historian and preservatioist who has worked in exotic locales such as Maputo, New Delhi, and even New York City! She co-founded BldgBlok - an app that provides tourists with location-based historic content.

Liz's latest restoration project is a big one! The SS Columbia - America's oldest excursion steamship - is making its way back to the Hudson River - listen to her tale of bringing the ship back to life!

Heroes by the Sea

Kuniyuki Okuyama and Andrea Roelofse's heroes are all, in one way or another, connected to the ocean. Okumu-san discusses his time spent as a lifeguard for beaches in Japan and Australia, and Andrea showcases a few sea-related creatives from her homeland, the Netherlands. (in Japanese and English)

This presentation was part of the PechaKucha Global Night 2013, and follows the theme of "hidden heroes."

In "Summit 2 Sea: The Expedition" from PechaKucha Accident Vol. 4Jesse Shimrock shares his harrowing month long experience of being on the first expedition to summit North America's highest mountain, Alaska's Denali at 20,320ft (6,914m) and then descend all the way to sea level ending on a rafting expedition from river to ocean. His adventures in the wilderness inspire us to push our limitations and serve a testament of the audacity and fortitude of the human condition.

Wietse van der Werf zet zich in voor de natuur maar doet dit met een sociale aanpak. Vanaf dit jaar zal hij samen met veteranen van de marine werkloze jongeren in Rotterdam gaan opleiden als Sea Rangers. Met een zelfgebouwd zeilend patrouilleschip zullen de Sea Rangers vervolgens beschermde zeegebieden in de Noordzee gaan beheren en restaureren.

Hailing from Aichi Prefecture, Yuta Kobayashi can be described as a person with an avid fascination with sea otters. In his spare time, he travels around Japan to visit aquariums with sea otters to learn more about these playful creatures. He will share in this presentation some of the interesting things he has learned about sea otters and their friends.

In “31 Days Under the Sea” from PKN Brooklyn Vol. 1, Fabien speaks about how he was inspired by Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to initiate Mission 31: a month-long research expedition conducted entirely underwater.
