Bakoko and the Cutty Sark Pavillion

Alastair Townsend of Tokyo-based design studio Bakoko was a presenter at the recent PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 64, and he's put together a very nice video of his presentation. Townsend presented the design and construction of the Cutty Sark Pavilion (the world's first building to have been realized using Bentley's parametric design software, Generative Components). The talk goes on to briefly present recent projects including Acacia Arboricola Synthetica (a synthetic tree house), a restaurant on the water (on top of a skyscraper), the Shi Shi O Doshi rain shelter, and the Matuso Mansion. I love hearing the Muppets-inspired "PechaKucha" chant at the start of the clip.

Say That

httpv:// PechaKucha Night is coming to Greenville -- the first event is set for November 12 -- and organizers have started preparing by putting together a fun little video covering an exercise we always love to see: how to properly pronounce PechaKucha. The verdict? They're actually not that bad, we've seen much, much worse...

The PKN Sendai Team is Safe

It took a while, but we've finally gotten word from the organizers of PechaKucha Night in Sendai -- the hardest hit area following the March 11 quake -- and they are all safe. Led by Daisuke Suzuki of Hiroto Suzuki Architects & Associates, we've been told that all the people who work at the office are safe, but some of them have lost their homes. The damage to the city is not as bad as near the coast, but there are many damaged buildings and homes. In a coincidence that we still have a hard time believing, they told us that they went to view a potential venue just two days before the earthquake, and that they were planning to have their first PKN on April 16, which is the day we are holding our Global PechaKucha Day - Inspire Japan event. The PKN Sendai team is hoping to participate in the global event somehow, although for now finding a venue is of course an issue. We'll keep everyone posted as we find out more.
