Meditation Experience in Vietnam

Meet Tom Christie, whose meditation practise and the quest for peace and zen has taken him on several retreats in places you probably haven't heard of, both in Vietnam and elsewhere. He's going to talk about how he got into meditation practise.

Music and Dreaming: Immaturity and Paperplanes

Thành Luke wrote his first song when he was in grade 8th and first time introduced to the guitar. Now his band Cá Hồi Hoang is quite a familiar name to Vietnamese young people. Their new album "Paper Dream" was released on 10 Dec 2017 at Yoko Cafe.

When asked how he started on this path, Thanh said "I didn't. Music was already inside of me." Nevertheless, it was quite a struggle until he could dedicated all his time for music. In his senior year at the University of Foreign Trade, he decided to quit and followed his passion.

Thanh named his talk at Pecha Kucha Night Vol. 10 "Music and Dreaming: Immaturity and Paperplanes.

We turned 3 last night!

Last night was our third volume of PKN in Ho Chi Minh City. Each event seems to get better and better! Thanks to all of those that presented and attended. Rainy season is upon us once more in southern Vietnam but about 70 people still braved the downpour to make it to Goc Pho Café in this Phu Nhuan neighborhood! We had 8 presenters lined up for the evening on a great variety of topics:                 -Why People Climb Mountains, Kevin Weingarten                 -Thinking Outside the Box, Lindsay Erdman                 -Fashion4Freedom… the project and the shoes, Rachael Carson                 -Tree Planting in Canada, Dan Van Engelen                 -Lollypop Music, Wade Johnston (thanks for the live music and delicious lollypops Wade!)                 -Jumping shots!, Stacia Maiorani                 -Being an International Pet Parent, Elizabeth Hunt-Lucarini                          -Analogue Photography, Nikki Bisenieks   Linh joined us with 40 beautiful notebooks, created from children's coloring projects of awesome zodiac signs! She is raising money for an orphanage in District 2 in HCMC that desperately needs reconstruction... raising the ground floor and bathrooms so that the rainy season's monsoons don't flood inside. She sold all 40 throughout the evening... making FOUR MILLION in VND to go to the orphanage! YEEEAAHHH! During the halfway break we also made paper airplanes out of Quito’s Vol. 6 poster and flew them around the café! …Photos to come (will be posted on the Vol. 3 event page of HCMC). Each event seems to gain more and more people. It was great to see so many past presenters there last night… and just hear everyone saying that they had a great time. We made it through the microphone glitches, the noisy blending of drinks, and again – the RAIN!   Below are some of the photos we've collected so far from last night's fun:   Kevin:   Kevin:   Lindsay:   Beautiful notebooks to raise money for an orphanage in District 2:   Stacia and Linh... raising money for an orphanage in D2:   Stacia:   Stacia:   Stacia:   Wade:   Wade:

The World's Best City When It's Smoggy

In this edition of Presentation of the Day (from PKN Shanghai Vol. 21), Jesper Larsson applies his previous ideas for turning Gothenburg into "The World's Best City When It Rains" to Shanghai, asking how to turn the city’s smog problem into a benefit. He looks at using lasers and UV lights to put a unique spin on everything from tai chi to punk rock, and suggests that using plants and urban gardening could turn parts of the city into clean air havens.
