In The Profound Beauty of Indigo from Chicago's Powered by PechaKucha Event: United States Artists 2014 Artists Assembly, Ronald Rickettsshares his story of moving to Japan to teach English and explore Japanese craft heritage. He discovered indigo leaves and had an apprenticeship at a Tokushima dye factory. He became an indigo farmer, dyer and visual artist. His work developed into creating installations, establishing a social practice and spreading the indigo art.

Christina er medlem av Dråpen i Havet på facebook, og når hun så bilde av lille Alan, den 3 år gamle gutten som druknet i Tyrkia kunne hun ikke sitte hjemme lenger, men måtte reise til Lesvos for å bidra. Hun har mann og tre barn hjemme, og det var spesielt tungt å dra fra lille Selma på 8 måneder. Turen til Lesvos har satt ting i perspektiv og noe av det som gjorde mest inntrykk er alle de flotte menneskene som ønsker seg en bedre fremtid.

Prior to moving to Canada in 2007, Angelie Michaud worked for as community development worker with the Philippine government and international funding institutions. Advocated development projects for the poorest communities in the highland region of the Cordillera thru community participation and human rights-based programming.
This method exerts its effort to integrate services in agriculture, education, nutrition and social services as decided by the community independently. In Canada I first worked in a shelter in Calgary assisting people in crisis, homeless, rehab clients, and parolees that changed the face of poverty in a 1st world country. I moved to Fredericton, NB; Victoria, AB, Halifax, NS; briefly in Rimouski, QC and back to Halifax, NS. I am currently working for Scotiabank.
Angelie is also the organizer of Second Harvest to aimed to support organic farming, advocate zero waste on crops by sharing info on edible parts of vegetables that is commonly thrown away.

From the bun to the cheese to the veggies to the meat, Chris talks about his upcoming epic project of his DIY Cheese Burger. He will harvest salt from the ocean and cultivate yeast from the air to create his buns. Raise and milk cows to make his own cheese. Grow his own veggies and make his on condiments. Finally raise another cow for the meat. It will be one epic cheese burger.

Since 1986, the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin has put more than 100 million meals on the tables of the 1 in 8 who are fracing hunger in southwestern Wisconsin.

Today we highlight another presentation from this month's inaugural edition of PechaKucha Night in Southend-on-Sea -- yesterday we featured media artist Damien Robinson -- this time with the works of Ackroyd & Harvey (Dan Harvey was the presenter). Here's a bio on the duo: Sculpture, photography, architecture and ecology are some of the disciplines that intersect in the work of Ackroyd and Harvey. Nature and structure, control and randomness are juxtaposed in their work to reveal a time-based practice with intrinsic bias towards process and event. They are acclaimed for their work with the light sensitivity of seedling grass and its ability to record complex photographic images, and have exhibited in galleries, museums and sites worldwide, articulating the seductions of time and visibility inherent in the transient organic image. In 2007 they realised FlyTower on the exterior of London’s National Theatre, whereby they grew the entire north and west face of the landmark Lyttelton flytower with seedling grass. In 2003 they grew the entire interior wall space of a deconsecrated and disused concrete church in south London (Dilston Grove). Twist, a permanent landmark sculpture opened in December 2008. Visible on entry into Bristol from the M32, the 20-metre high tower is clad in an intensive layering of thin dark grey slates – a waste material from the roofing industry – and is lit using power generated from a combination of solar energy and wind power. Over the last few years they have made a series of expeditions to the High Arctic with Cape Farewell, looking at the effects of global warming on the ecosystem. PKN Southend-on-Sea Vol. 2 is set to take place April 29.

The next PechaKucha Night in Gisborne (Vol. 3) is just a week away (June 18), to be held at the Tawera Studio Gallery. Organizer Pene Walsh sends in a few details: PechaKucha Night Gisborne on 18th June is to celebrate Matariki. Matariki is the beginning of the Maori New Year and refers to the time to harvest root crops and the rising of the constellation Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, Subaru in Japan or Matariki as she is known in New Zealand. Just to mix things up we are moving venue once again – this time to introduce the new space, Tawera Gallery and Studio. Speakers and topics include an astrologer, the Matariki story, an iPhone apps developer, and what is the future of the presently defunct Gisborne train line?
