Redesign a School

Architect Pascale Sablan is sharing her experience promoting diversity and including children in the design process of redesigning a school in Haiti after the earthquake. Following the international building code in the design she is also quantifying the sustainability of the product and encouraging the audience to share their passion and knowledge with children.

Liz McEnaney is an urban historian and preservatioist who has worked in exotic locales such as Maputo, New Delhi, and even New York City! She co-founded BldgBlok - an app that provides tourists with location-based historic content.

Liz's latest restoration project is a big one! The SS Columbia - America's oldest excursion steamship - is making its way back to the Hudson River - listen to her tale of bringing the ship back to life!

Aviva is a ceramicist / artist / florist from Brooklyn, New York.  She graduated from Cooper Union in 2011 with a BFA.  She has been finding nature in Brooklyn her whole life and stubbornly refuses to leave NY - thus forcing her to create an indoor jungle.

Her firm, Terreform ONE, built a sustainable insect shelter on site to conduct extensive research on crickets - studying their growth, social development, and reproductive habits...before harvesting the adults and turning them into tasty treats!

Maria is an architect, educator, designer, and community builder in New York City. She is an innovator in ecological design, smart cities, sustainable urban infrastructure, water, transportation, and waste. Maria is a leader in interdisciplinary education focused on future cities.

Swiss PechaKucha Night

Tokyo is ramping up for a fantastic February, with 2 special PechaKucha Nights taking place at SuperDeluxe. First up, on Friday, February 7 is a special "Swiss" PechaKucha Night, in conjunction with the Swiss Embassy, and part of the "SwissDays" festival at Roppongi Hills (February 6-9). The lineup with include the likes of SANAA's Ryue Nishizawa and Atelier Oï's Patrick Reymond, with music throughout the night provided by Gypsy Sound System.

Lava Flows

“Hawaiian eruptions sometimes produce these spectacular fountains…” Specialist in Geology and Geophysics Scott Rowland has a hot, incandescent love for lava. In “Lava Flows” from PKN Honolulu Vol. 22 he speaks about his research he’s done on both fresh flows and and older volcanos, and how lava has affected the residents of the Hawaiian islands.

Fragility, Flowers and Contemporary Portraits

"What I love about the medium, is that it’s innate honesty. A drawing lets slip its own history."   In "Fragility, Flowers and Contemporary Portraits" from PechaKucha Night Sunshine Coast Vol. 18, Greer Townshend shares her passion for and practice of drawing.  Her work is frequently underpinned by the concept of fragility, whether related to the process of memory, language or the self. Greer's practice combines portraiture and elements of nature, inferring an inherent connection between the two, and denoting life cycles. Greer will be talking about her take on ‘creating’ contemporary portraiture including her current fascination with all things 'flowering'.

Flowers and Nuclear Warfare

“I Think about the relationship to perception…..seeing is believing.” In "Flowers and Nuclear Warfare" from PechaKucha Night New York Vol.16, Eric LoPresti makes artwork that examines the imposition of technology upon the environment and the aftermath of the Cold War. His dramatic landscapes juxtapose abstract elements with representations of the vast deserts of the American west, exploring relationships between science, identity, history and conflict. Following in the painterly tradition of the apocalyptic sublime, LoPresti’s artistic practice explores how our lives are shaped by trauma and beauty.
