Creativity Loves Constraints: Improvisation, Always our Very Best Alternative

BY GERT POPPE
IN MAASTRICHT

In business as in life, we try to control the future by making (business) strategies and (marketing) plans. But most of the time, things turn our differently, don’t go as planned. And then we fall back on improvisation.

Improvisation always is our very best alternative. We improvise when something unexpected happens; we improvise because we have forgotten to take certain influences into account; we improvise when people behave differently than we expected.

The best leaders, the best managers, the best professionals are not those that excel in analysis and making plans and strategies, but the ones that fully master and exploit their improvisation skills.

And, by the way, improvisation is also a very useful approach to living one’s life.

Manet’s Déjeuner sur L’Herbe: A sustainable breakfast

BY CHRISTIANE STEFFENS
@ VOL 27 ON NOV 23, 2015

Inspired by a pivotal work in French painting, Édouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbeChristiane Steffens embarked on an artistic inquiry into sustainability challenges. The result will amaze you.

Christiane's presentation is about an artistic inquiry into sustainability challenges. Her project is a sustainable reenactment of the tableau as depicted in Édouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe, a pivotal work in French painting. The imagery is well-known and caused a scandal when first exhibited. The painting features a nude woman lunching with two wholly dressed men – a contrast unseen. She stares directly at the viewer, which was considered to be another provocation. The men are dressed as dandies. The women is sitting on her clothes. Next to these clothes we see a bread and a fruit basket, as in a still life. To Émile Zola, Manet’s Déjeuner is his greatest work, one in which he succeeds to place figures of natural grandeur in a landscape.

Christiane shows the display of a patchwork quilt of reused pieces of cloth. This quilt has the same measures of the original Manet canvas (208 by 264.5 centimeters). The linen patches embrace the same color spectrum as the Déjeuner. Each patch has one of the dominant colors of Manet’s painting, and the ensemble of patches reflects the color impression the painting makes on the spectator, with green, blue and black overtones. In that respect, the quilt has a pixel-like quality. Who has seen the Déjeuner will recognize it instantly.

The quilt is a creative example of sustainability – not only sustainability in the sense of reused cloth, but also sustainability of ideas and motives as they are expressed in major works of art. Manet’s masterpiece itself echoed existing pictorial patterns – as the theme of the pick-nick was to be abundantly found in older gravures.

The quilt may serve as a lieu d’innovation – a place where people can sit together – either on the quilt or around it – to exchange views, ideas, and stories. The quilt can also be ‘visited’, or ‘occupied’, by individuals allowing them for meditation and prayer possibly offering  inspiration.

Going Against the Crisis

BY DESPOINA POLYZOIDOU
@ MSM GOES PECHAKUCHA ON MAR 17, 2017

Despoina Polyzoidou shows how the economic crisis in Greece has triggered a new era for the primary sector of the country. In order to find ways to cope with economic challenges, her fellow countrymen are not staying idle but rather focus more and more on agriculture, forestry, fishing and mining to create special, top quality, branded products as a way to fight the crisis.

Despoina is concerned about her country and wants to share "views from inside" because she feels that the media sometimes distorts information and only emphasises the negative sides of a situation.

Despite the crisis, she believes, there is always hope and room for positive actions.

Diseñar desde el corazón consciente

BY GABI VALLADARES
@ VOL 2 ON APR 28, 2016

Steamed Up over STEM

BY JOHN DEBACHER
@ VOL 22 ON APR 13, 2017

What's all the fuss and focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in our schools? It's spread beyond earlier efforts to proactively help our young women not feel stigmatized if they enjoy an equation or two, and now threatens to spread a cumulonimbus over our educational system. Where are the Arts in all this? Not even chopped liver -- that might qualify as culinary science. I believe that, when you get beyond all the flash of STEM's appeal, it's components can, upon reflection, be seen as progeny of the Arts. The necessary components of abstraction, classification and description rely on humankind's unique language abilities, as do the symbols in formulas and theorems. Science could not have developed without the fundamental dance of discourse and recorded evidence that developed from the advancement of oral storytelling into poetry to literature...and of course, how could we survive any of this without humor?
