Standing at the Crossroads of Biology, Computation, and Design

BY DAVID BENJAMIN
@ VOL 4 ON MAY 18, 2015

David Benjamin is Principal at The Living, a design firm that brings architecture and design to life — literally. David expounds upon some of the amazing projects his firm uses to combine natural, biological intelligence and artificial intelligence to find new solutions to old problems.

Whether it’s using living mussels and sensors to understand changes in water quality, or growing biodegradable bricks using the root-like structures of mushrooms and agricultural waste, and then building a structure using 10 thousand of these, the projects in action are a small window into our future.

We were very happy to see some PechaKucha love shown on the Architecture for Humanity Chicago website, first with the appearance of Katherine Darnstadt's presentation "Design Like You Give a Damn," from PechaKucha Night in Chicago Vol. 12 -- you do know that you can embed PK presentations, right? And as organizer Peter Exley points out, the "Street Furniture Competition" entries include a few PKN Chicago vets, notably Joseph Altshuler (Vol. 13) and Eylül Wintermeyer (Vol. 9). "Chicago fans will remember Eylül's megalomaniacal wine vessel and bread maker that sustained thousands in New York, Joseph looking through Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window into the lives of his Chicago neighbors, and Katherine eating dirt, literally." If you're in Chicago, you won't want to miss the next volume.

Heineken Open Design Explorations (Powered by PechaKucha)

We're very happy to announce that PechaKucha has teamed up with Heineken in support of the Open Design Explorations competition, to help find a few designers from all disciplines that will get to participate in the creation and launch of a temporary club space at next year's edition of Milan Design Week (Milano Salone). The first phase of the project will see four special PechaKucha events held in Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Milan, and New York, where those chosen to participate will get to present their ideas for the space using the 20 x 20 format. One designer from each city will be chosen and then sent to Milan to participate in the final phase, which is the creation of the space itself. This is first time we have teamed up with anyone for a project like this, but we feel it is a great way to give the PechaKucha community a chance to enter and hopefully be seen at the Milano Salone. If you would like to participate, please note that you need to be able to attend the PechaKucha events in one of the four cities mentioned, and your entry needs to be sent by August 14. You'll find all details on how to enter on the following page. Update: Please note that the deadline for the event in Tokyo has been extended to August 21.

PechaKucha + Heineken in Tokyo this Wednesday

Please join us this Wednesday (August 24) here in Tokyo for a very special PechaKucha event, which will feature 20x20 presentations by the chosen finalists in the Heineken Open Design Explorations competition. Each finalist will be presenting their work -- just as in a regular PechaKucha Night -- and one will be chosen to participate in the design of a temporary club space at next year's Milan Design Week. Similar events are also going to be held in Milan, Sao Paulo, and New York. It all takes place at the birthplace of PechaKucha, SuperDeluxe, with the regular start of 20:20 (doors open at 19:00). Entry will be free, and the beer on hand -- Heineken, of course -- will be priced at ¥500.

Inspiring Dilemmas

In this edition of Presentation of the Day (from PKN Chicago Vol. 20), architect and entrepreneur Marc Teer is looking for trouble. Well, more so problems: he believes in finding design issues in the architecture field, solving them, and getting the physical or metaphorical structural solution built. Presenter Bio: Fredy

Fredy is Congolese by nationality, but since 2014 has been in exile in Malawi.  His family values of education and service for humanity led him to dedicate his efforts to fight for a noble cause: denouncing the human rights abuses in the Congo. Since coming to Malawi Fredy has experienced life in a refugee camp.  Discouraged by the multiple legal, socio-economic, socio-cultural, and psychological bounderies that refugees are faced with, Fredy and his brother saw enormous potential in the youth at the camp and founded Salama Africa in 2014. Only two years later, Salama Africa has promoted youth who were nominated vice-champions in a national-wide dance competition, youth who won the Malawi’s Got Talent competition, and have attracted attention of American filmmakers who produced a documentary about their work. This has been a renaissance of Fredy's desire to serve, and also a fresh start for the youth who are developing their potential and living just some of their dreams. Forced, and forged, Fredy has experienced many new beginnings.
