Paths Connecting Cities

BY ANDY SMITH
@ PKN_AKL_SPECIAL EDITION ON MAR 28, 2014

Advocate at Walk Auckland Andy Smith speaks of the tragic history of the Auckland Harbor Bridge — once planned to include bike and foot paths, but built as a four-lane automobile bridge — and the numerous campaigns that were launched by cyclist and walker groups to implement a connecting path. Pressure lead to an innovative solution: a tube/tunnel suspended from the clip-on just under the bridge, away from traffic, and offering majestic views of the city.

Bridges of Europe

BY ROBIN STAM
@ VOL 8 ON DEC 03, 2013

On the first of January 2002 new banknotes were introduced in Europe. In addition to windows and gateways, these seven banknotes also depict several bridges. Each bridge has an individual appearance, all of which can be recognised as having originated throughout certain periods in European cultural history.

Designed by Robert Kalina, the bridges are meant to illustrate the tight collaboration and communication between Europe and the rest of the world in general, but more importantly, amongst the European countries in particular.

However, the bridges portrayed in the banknotes are fictional.

They have been designed to prevent one single member state from having a bridge on their banknote opposed to other states not having any depicted in theirs. In other words, “member state neutral” banknotes.

Now wouldn’t it be amazing if these fictional bridges suddenly turn out to actually exist in real life?

Touring New Zealand, Living with Dogs, and Bringing PK to Mygdalhus

Presentations Recorded at PKN Gibsons Vol. 2, it's time to pack you bags and accompany Coralie Swaney has she takes you on a tour of New Zealand, the Tauiwi (non-Maori) way. Zissis Roubos is an Athens-based actor and director, and in this presentation (in Greek, from PKN Athens Vol. 3) he makes a case for improving the relationship between people and dogs, illustrating how we can better live with them. Posters New today on our Tumblr blog are the two posters (with art by Gary Venn) that were produced for tomorrow night's PKN Hamilton Vol. 10 -- an outdoor event that got postponed earlier due to rain -- and the poster for the very first PKN in Launceston. Photos Today's collection of photo galleries from PechaKucha Nights the world over. Pictured above, PKN Beirut Vol. 12.PechaKucha event in Mygdalhus, organized by PKN Aalborg [Flickr]PKN Ekaterinburg Vol. 3 [Flickr]PKN Toronto Vol. 11 [Flickr]PKN Beirut Vol. 12 [Flickr]PKN Banja Luka Vol. 2 [Flickr] One of the links above is to a gallery of photos for a special PechaKucha event that was held in the town of Mygdalhus, and here's PKN Aalborg organizer Annette Scheibel -- who was behind the event -- with a report on how it all went. The PechaKucha event in Mygdalhus here in Denmark on May 23 went splendid! Aproximately 40 people attended the small venue -- the very active art-gallery Mygdalhus is driven by the artists themselves, and serves as a community house as well. Summer has hit Denmark, and we gathered the PechaKucha participants outside in the sun for a cosey network dinner organised by the gallery people After an introduction to what PechaKucha is, Claus Gajhede talked about his passion -- he organises adventure role-plays in the woods for children and for adults, and he explained passionately how role-playing can release a lot of potential in people's minds by playing parts, getting into storytelling, and just spending time in nature by the fire or doing all sorts of tasks. Street artist, illustrator, and computer play designer Lars Pank talked about evolving his art and the many layers of connecting different kinds of expression and storytelling through recognizable forms. Architect/artist and art gallery manager of the gallery in the lighthouse of Hirtshals (located beautifully by the ocean on the west coat) Søren Friis talked about his work, sources of inspiration through a long life work with geometric forms and light, and collaborative work on a big sculpture/installation at Aalborg's harbour with a Danish poet called Peter Laugesen. Art gallery owner Jens Guldsmed Thomsen made a very poetic speech about the meeting between art and viewer. After the break, artist Niels Fabæk presented the Nordjylland and Berlin-based art-streamer project CITY-LIFTING, and German jewelry artist Lioba Maria Solga shared her passion for tango with a short introduction speech, and then she danced to music and slides just changing colours -- with a broom!!! As funny, passionate, and unexpected people are, so can PechKucha show the variety of the human mind. Anders Budolf Andersen, a graphic designer, has tried to develop a graphic reward system for doing tedious tasks to make them joyful to do and shared them on a website and blog for free download. Finally, project manager Nikkie Dahm Breinholt told us about her ideas for BUNKERLOVE, an art-festival project in the leftover war bunkers from World War 2, located on the beaches of the west coast.Calendar Tonight (May 29) sees PKN Saint-Etienne Vol. 9, while tomorrow includes the following four events: PKN Providence Vol. 38, PKN Jersey Vol. 1, PKN Tokyo Vol. 92, and PKN Hamilton Vol. 10.

Stem Cell Art, Bridging Community and Students Through Art, and the Story Behind a Poster

Presentations Irwin Adam is a chemical engineer, but all of his friends are designers. As you'll see in his presentation (from PKN Toronto Vol. 10), after a crazy journey through Siberia, he moved to Toronto from Montreal. Inspired by his designer friends, he's turning 2D stem cells into 3D "art." In his presentation (from PKN Dallas Vol. 10), Bernardo Diaz describes the program he developed to connect his students with some of the city's community centers. Posters Instead of adding a new poster to the Tumblr blog today, we share the story behind the making of Springfield, MO's poster for its upcoming Vol. 8, produced by organizer Pam Rubert.Since we are hosting this event at our studio on our lonely industrial street, I drew our streetscape for the poster. When the full moon rises over our street, I sometimes think that my husband's aluminum sculpture is reaching for the moon. When I look out of my office window, I can sometimes see a family of groundhogs that have made a home underground. Every day they are throwing more dirt and rocks out of the hole, so the tunnels must be getting bigger and more complex. I imagined PechaKucha Night Vol. 8 as sort of an underground network of a variety of people and creatures.Below, the groundhogs in question: Photos Here's a photo gallery [Flickr] for the recent PKN Norrkoping Vol. 20, held earlier this month. Please note that the dates for Vol. 21 and Vol. 22 have already been announced, and are set for November 6 and December 4 respectively. Calendar We kick off the weekend with these events tonight (October 26): PKN Orlando Vol. 7, PKN Bern Vol. 19, PKN Waterville Vol. 9, PKN Koszalin Vol. 10, PKN Wellington Vol. 17, PKN Cagliari Vol. 4, and PKN Castellon de la Plana Vol. 2. On Saturday, you'll find PKN Lodz Vol. 9.

Bringing Beer and Opera Together, How to Better Collaborate, and a Teaser from San Jose

Presentations Mirella Amato from beerology.ca gives a presentation (from PKN Toronto Vol. 17) about the similarities between beer and opera, which has lead to her creating an event called Hopera, "an evening of craft beer and song." Today's social, ecological, and business challenges are of such complexity that we cannot tackle them alone. We must engage the energy, ideas, and relationships of diverse participants to imagine, create and activate new possibilities. Designer Greg Judelman of The Moment, an innovation lab, presents (also from PKN Toronto Vol. 17) an approach to effective collaboration for system and organizational change. Posters Today's addition to the Tumblr blog is the poster you see above for next week's PKN Maribor Vol. 10. As with all previous Maribor posters, it was designed by Slovenian graphic designer Darjan Panic, and is entirely made up of paper art that is then photographed. You'll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page. Video We have another video to share today, this time a teaser for the upcoming PKN San Jose (Costa Rica) Vol. 4, happening on November 28.  Calendar It's yet another big PKN Thursday (for November 15): PKN Leeds Vol. 15, PKN Groningen Vol. 19, PKN Detroit Vol. 13, PKN Blue Mountains Vol. 4, PKN St. Albert Vol. 2, PKN Kiruna Vol. 4, PKN Vaxjo Vol. 13, PKN Dornbirn Vol. 1, and PKN Moscow (Idaho) Vol. 3. Tomorrow we have PKN Aalen Vol. 12 and PKN Hamptons Vol. 2.

Building Bridges, Not Walls at the US - Mexico Border

"We hopes whoever becomes president builds more bridges instead of walls [because] we are sister cities, divided only by the river."In Building Bridges, Not Walls at the US - Mexico Border from PKN Tokyo Vol 134, PechaKucha Night El Paso City Organizers (and acclaimed architects) William Helm and Edgar Lopez describe the symbiotic relationship of the sister cities of El Paso and Juarez. The residents of the two cities activate a third space of the US/Mexico border, called "Pass of the North"  which produces a rich milieu of creativity, art and culture. In this place which was historically known as "Paso del Norte" along the Spanish road from Mexico City to Santa Fe, the two cities have come together to use the PechaKucha conversation to bridge across the border. 20 x 20 x 2 cities = building bridges not walls.

"People were interested not about only the food that it was made, but also the backgroud from where did it come from." In "When Food Brings Cultures Together" from PechaKucha Night Maastricht Vol.31, Sonia Kar is an independent entrepreneur who tells us the idea about her online platform, where different cultures meet through their menus. We all are effectively ambassadors or representatives of our families, cultural backgrounds and countries.
