Temkin gives an overview of independenly created games, like minecraft, fez, and spleunky, in order to show what great games (and great art forms) could be created outside publisher and distributor influences.

Bob Barber has been playing Go for 30 years. He has directed 65 quarterly tournaments in Chicago and was Director of the 18th U.S. Go Congress in 2002. He is an amateur 1 dan.

 

Mark Rubenstein has been playing Go for 15 years. Before that, he played what he thought was Go but was really just random nonsense. He is the president of the Evanston Go Club and Membership Services Coordinator for the American Go Association.

Rethinking Video Games, Slovakia's zerozero Studio, and a First PKN in Fort Lauderdale

Presentations The title of writer and academic Colin Harvey's presentation (from PKN Blue Mountains Vol. 1) pretty much says it all: "Everything You Know About Video Games Is Wrong." Colin goes through the history of video games -- from Pong all the way to current dog raising simulations -- and reveals a lot of unlikely truths. Irakli Eristavi and Pavol Šilla are members of zerozero, one of the most progressive architect studios in Slovakia, and in this presentation (in Slovak, from PKN Kosice Vol. 1) they highlight some of their work. Presentations Rory Slater's presentation (from PKN Derby Vol. 6) reveals what role the county of Derbyshire played in this year's Olympic Games. Cheng Fengqi is a visual designer, and in his presentation (in Chinese, from PKN Shenzhen Vol. 11) he shows how to arrange retail shops in order to provide a joyful shopping environment for the customer. Walking for Art, Thoughts on Games, and a Teaser Video from Hyderabad

Presentations Walking and taking in art sure sounds like a winning combination, and that's just what you get with First Fridays Artswalk. Mary McGinnis uses her presentation (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 1) to explain the project. Federico Fasce (of Urustar) talks about how he thinks games can change the world. He believes that games are the most important form of expression of this century. The presentation (in Italian, from PKN Genoa Vol. 1) covers his experience with Privacy Traders, a game designed and developed for high school students. In Privacy Traders, through mechanical trade and exchange, the idea is to stimulate a reflection on the sharing of personal data, on the role of the internet and social networks, and on the importance to better understand the people to whom we entrust sensitive data every day. Interactive Art Through Video Games

We kick off a new week of "Presentations of the Day" with this fine example by Greg Whistance-Smith, in which he examines what a video game is, and looks at the variety of expressions possible within interactive arts as a whole. He gives several examples of games which he believes have in some way transcended simply being fun, turning into interactive arts or experiences.

Games as Interactive Art

"We're trying to translate these classical concepts from painting -- a static medium -- to 3D environments..." Artist, game designer, and author Chris Solarski speaks on the points where video games intersect with classical art, film, and animation. In "Games as Interactive Art" from PKN Tokyo Vol. 114, he discusses the interactive aspect of games, and how this element fundamentally changes the way we engage with images.

Where Games are Going (Or Not)

A head-worn device that allows players to feel 3D space through haptics, rich audio, and visuals -- this is the future of games: Artist, game designer, and UCLA Design|Media Arts professor Eddo Stern discusses a number of the projects he has worked on both personally, and in collaboration with his students. In "Where Games are Going (Or Not)" from PKN Tokyo Vol. 116, he shows off three projects in varying stages of development: a sensory deprivation game that uses haptic and audio feedback, a role-playing game that involves an audience of players using motion technology, and a hand-drawn game that incorporates elements of theater.

Banding Together through Games

Making a band means getting lost, building, and fighting evil denizens of space! Roger Hicks talks about his games and how his life has inspired his games to come to life. In "Banding Together through Games" from some special guerilla-style PechaKucha recordings at Tokyo Game Show 2014, we see that his love of music and getting lost, inspired and encouraged him to keep working on developing games, and meeting new people along the way.
