Landscapes in Australia (and Beyond), the Mississippi Goddam Play, and Teaching Kids Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship

Presentations Christian Fletcher is a landscape photographer who photographs not only the beautiful South West of Australia but is now expanding his portfolio to include the rest of Australia and locations around the world. His presentation (from PKN Dunsborough Vol. 5) covers a new photography collaboration, exhibition, and workshop that is coming up in the near future. How did Jonathan Norton get out of writing a 20-page assignment? He promised a 100-page play instead, based on the Nina Simone song "Mississippi Goddam." Here's the story (from PKN Dallas Vol. 10). As we find out in this presentation (in Ukrainian, from PKN Kyiv Vol. 9), Kids-Coins is an educational project -- held inside and outside school -- that teaches children and teenagers the basics of financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Sergey Bidenko and Irina Zolotarevych -- co-authors of the "Kids-Coins" projects -- are experienced business coaches who have implemented 37 training and educational programs for adults and youth. Posters Today's addition to the Tumblr blog is for Miami's upcoming very special Vol. 20 -- we always love seeing a city reach that number -- which doubles as a pre-Art Basel evening. It happens on December 1, and you'll find the full list of presenters with links on the event page. Photos Mikkeli recently held its very first PKN (and two weeks later, its Vol. 2), and here's the photo gallery [Flickr] to prove it -- you'll also find the full list of presenters with links on the event page. Calendar There are no PKNs tonight, but tomorrow night (November 20) you can look forward to the following two events: PKN Calgary Vol. 14 and PKN Coquitlam Vol. 8.

Toronto Vol. 22 and Beyond

Toronto's next Volume is fast approaching, and will be upon us in a matter of hours. The poster for this most auspicious of occasions was once again designed by the talented Trevor Embury of aftermodern.lab, and displays the theme for this evening's festivities: Diversity. PKN Toronto Vol. 22 will take place on March 19 at 7pm at the Gladstone Hotel. In other T.O. news, PKN Toronto's organizer Vivien Leung was recently interviewed on PechaKucha for local community blog Toronto Is Awesome. Here's a snippet: Vivien’s favourite presenter of all-time is 11 year-old Sako Ghanaghounian. Sako was the first ever kid to present at Pecha Kucha Toronto. Sako talked about what it’s like to be a kid in the city in response to a comment made by local politician Doug Holyday, who stated a city was not the most ideal environment to raise a child. Sako had a good rebuttal, with a presentation full of photos of him and his friends learning, exploring and having fun with friends and family in Toronto. Check out the full write-up: "Can You Say PechaKucha?" To see more great posters from PechaKucha Nights all over the world, check out our Tumblr blog.

Beyond Eating Local: Using History as a Guide to a New Food Security

How can Hawaii become the model agricultural society for the world? Josh Lanthier-Welch gives a great crash-course on the agricultural history of the Hawaiian islands. The islands went from feeding being self-sufficient to entirely reliant on imports. In "Beyond Eating Local: Using History as a Guide to a New Food Security" from PKN Honolulu Vol. 18, Josh shows us how the Hawaiians can once again utilise their lush volcanic farmland to return themselves to a sustainable, self-sufficient agricultural society.

Taking Architecture Beyond

"Architecture has no scale. It can go from a backpack to a city."In Taking Architecture Beyond, from Tokyo, Vol. 125, student of "future master" Sou Fujimoto, fellow architect Marcello Galiotto talks about the process of not only interpreting an abstract concept architecturally, but pushing it beyond its architectural limitations. In this highly sophisticated presentation, Galiotto shares his insights in combining imaginative references of architecture, nature, and structure into real living spaces. Enjoy!
