Le Garage 2067, qu'est-ce que c'est?
BY FLORENT MOULINARD
@ VOL 14
ON JUN 30, 2016

PKN Mauritius Vol. 2
Last week saw a second edition of PechaKucha Night in Mauritius, and organizer Stephen Ng again reports on a successful event. For me, being the organizer, Vol. 2 was a much better orchestrated event. This time, I had an actual idea of how the event should be running and what to expect: from technical difficulties to last minute changes from presentators, things went pretty smoothly. With a public of around 150 who were still mostly new to the concept, it was with amazement that they discovered how Mauritius needed this kind of event to promote designers/artists/creators. Feedback was all positive. Here's a look at that night's lineup: Jason Lafolle & Annick Sandian, (video conceptors) Ravior (jewelry maker) Architects Studio Kolektif Revey Twa (association of artists against AIDS/HIV) Gilberte Marimootoo (artist/painter) Doorgesh Mungur (photographer) Arnaud Goviden (cartoonist and design student) Bernard Thanay (artist/painter) Some of these presenters will be featured here at PechaKucha Daily in the coming weeks. Photos from the event are courtesy of Clyde Koa Wing.
PKN at Interactivity
PechaKucha Night made an appearance in Philadelphia late last month at "Interactivity," the annual conference of the Association of Children's Museums, and from this post over at the Living in Kidcity blog, it sounds like it was good fun. I would definitely support the drinking game suggested at the end of the post -- all in the name of charity! Pictured from left: Jane Werner (CEO of the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh), Jon McEuen (co-organizer of PKN Philadelphia), and Peter Exley (organizer of PKN Chicago).
Kolektif Revey Twa
Presenting at PechaKucha Night in Mauritius Vol. 2, AIDS/HIV activists Kolektif Revey Twa brought their message to the audience. Organizer Stephen Ng talks more about the association, and what it means to the country. Kolektif Revey Twa -- literally "The Wake Up Collective" in Mauritian creole -- is an association of artists who are fighting against AIDS/HIV in Mauritius. It is estimated that there are 15,000 HIV positive people in the country -- for a population of 1.2 million, this number is actually quite alarming. One of the reasons for this number is the lack of sensitization and education about the disease and how it is spread, but also a lack of initiative from the authorities to tackle the problem effectively. The "Zarbiens," a group of creative people led by Stephan Jauffret-Rezannah, Nicolas Bastien-Sylva, and Emilien Jubeau (who presented at Vol. 1) have created this collective with the objective getting things moving, along with other associations. Their presentation at Vol. 2 was indeed quite moving. They came up in front of the audience with their masks to send a specific message that the AIDS infected people are unortunately seen differently and that it could be anyone of us. They explained their motivation and their goals, by using their talents to the profit of a very important problem...and that's without asking for anything in return. In fact, they have recently engaged themselves in a huge project to sensitize Mauritians of the AIDS/HIV problem. It will mainly involve the use of billboards in strategic areas of the country that clearly will send their message and hopefully make all of us get a better understanding of the disease and the people involved. They have been doing a tremendous job already by using their time and creativity, and the thing they are waiting on now is to get the necessary funding to get their latest project up and running. Local authorities and other private organisations have already promised to do so but they are still waiting for the actions. Unfortunately this is how it is in the country. Maybe that is a call for the PK Foundation to possibly help them out...a help for the whole of Mauritius...
PechuKucha Event in Chicago
PechaKucha Night in Chicago organizer Peter Exley is teaming up with the Chicago Architecture Foundation and the Association of Architecture Organizations for a special edition PechaKucha event, to be held November 15 at the Graham Foundation. The list of presenters has yet to be announced, but Jean Linsner -- a PKN Chicago alum with her "Marriage Manifesto" presentation -- will emcee the event.
PKN Santa Cruz in the News
A nice bit of press coverage for PKN Santa Cruz from the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Chip, director of the Santa Cruz Downtown Association, first became aware of Pecha Kucha several years ago and began the application process to launch "Pecha Kucha Nights" in Santa Cruz. Concurrently, Crystal Birns, coordinator for the City Arts Program, had been discussing a similar idea with the Museum of Art & History. Two months ago, the first Pecha Kucha Night launched at club Motiv in downtown Santa Cruz to a packed house. On Friday, the second "Pecha Kucha Night" will be hosted by MAH, under the leadership of Emily Hope Dobkin, with nine presenters presenting their "works in progress." Read the full story here. The city's Vol. 2 happens tonight.

St. Joseph - Small Town, Big Heart
"The only way to shed light on ignorance and resentment is to talk about it."In St. Joseph - Small Town, Big Heart, from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 134, Lana Rappette, Assistant and Communications Lead for the Whirlpool Creatives Association reveals that St Joseph, MI is far more than just a sleepy summer tourist destination on the shore of Lake Michigan. Sure, St Joseph has its sandy beaches and an agricultural industry fit for making apple pies, but it also has a thriving, respected and close knit arts community. One that is immune to city borders and has helped heal relationships and restore the beauty in the neighboring city of Benton Harbor. PechaKucha St Joseph was started just one year ago in early 2015. Now all people, everyday people, have a chance to share ideas and fun doing it! The city hopes to fuel a positive and creative culture through its PechaKucha platform.
