Fun and Photography, Improvising to eBay Items, and Photos from Santiago

Presentations Vikram Jammula sure loves photography, and in his presentation (from PKN Hyderabad Vol. 9) -- featuring some fantastic visuals -- he hopes to make us all understand why. This presentation (in German, from PKN Augsburg Vol. 1) is made up of random selections, forcing Dominic Antritter to improvise to images he has never seen. The slides are all strange and funny -- and real -- eBay auctions that needed some explaining. Posters Today's addition to the Tumblr blog is a poster for Osijek's upcoming Vol. 1, set for October 5 -- you'll find the presenters listed with links on the official event page.  Photos We were big fans of the poster for PKN Santiago Vol. 3, and now have a photo gallery [Flickr] to share from the event itself.  Calendar Here's what to look for tonight (September 13): PKN Ottawa Vol. 6, PKN Burlington Vol. 8,PKN Perth Vol. 10, PKN Bordeaux Vol. 8, and a special edition PK event in Amsterdam at the Stedelijk Museum. In today's Presentation of the Day, "Fun by Design" from PKN Tokyo Vol. 77, Koichi Suzuno (of Torafu Architects) shows off three design projects he has worked on in his spare time. From kitchen tools in the shape of children's building blocks to a small wooden table that can be hung over the railing of your balcony, his small projects all incorporate -- to a certain degree -- an element of fun.

Is Crowd-funding the New "Like" Button?

Projects never thought possible are getting funded and produced thanks to the nigh-limitless power of the crowd. Is this the future of business? In today's Presentation of the Day, "Is Crowd-funding the New 'Like' Button?" from PKN New York Vol. 14, RocketHub founder Brian Meece gives us a quick rundown of the crowd-funding phenomenon and what is needed to get your own independent project funded. He uses independent shoe-producer Spira as an example: Spira makes revolutionary new sneakers with springs in the soles to make walking easier.

5 reasons why Pecha Kucha is **THE** night out in Coventry this Friday...

Yes, it's Pecha Kucha night at the Tin Music & Arts centre from 7pm this Friday, here's 5 reasons why this night of merry amusement just might be for you... 1) If you like TED talks, stand up comedy or open mic nights - Pecha Kucha is sort of like all three rolled into one. At each night there's a massive mix of zany, opinionated, inspirational and downright oddball people talking (or perhaps shouting, dancing, miming or singing) through a series of 20 images. You don't have to worry about stifling any yawns, each person is only allowed 20 seconds per image... before you know it you've had six and a half minutes of eclectic entertainment... and after 3 or 4 you realise the £3 entry is definitely giving your two bob's worth. 2) TFI Friday and alcohol is served. The Tin offer loads of continental drinks and local brews including Coventry's very own Byatt's beer. 3) Fighting winter flu? You can watch Pecha Kucha from your sickbed - All the Pecha Kucha presentations are put online at www.pechakucha.org/cities/coventry. Seriously laugh-out-loud recommendations from the Pecha Kucha Coventry 'Christmas' edition are: How to Annoy Your Friends on Facebook at Christmas by Simon Fairbanks and Placing Children on Your Lap: the Art of Ventriloquism by Michael Mayhew.  You can also follow antics via Twitter live on the night @PKN_coventry. 4) Try it and like it? You can go to a Pecha Kucha night ANYWHERE in the world. Originally starting in Tokyo (the tongue twisting "Pecha Kucha" title means "chit chat"), nights now take place in over 700 cities worldwide. So next time you're surfing the Air B&B waves to Dubai, Budapest, San Francisco or Paris you can also take in a Pecha Kucha night*. 5) If you get the itch after seeing (and possibly secretly mocking) others, you can have a go too. Anyone is welcome to sign up to 'do' a Pecha Kucha night on any subject, in any style, with any images and props you might care to use. Once you've completed this curious right-of-passage, you realise there's no return; it's addictive, it's fun and it's a serious preference to sitting in and worrying about your post-January diet. See you on Friday! *disclaimer - not all nights may be as good as Pecha Kucha Coventry. Please also note that you could be educated or inspired and that there's a serious risk of meeting people... PECHA KUCHA COVENTRY Friday 20th February 7pm-11pm 'Design your City' - a theme for Global Pecha Kucha Night @ The Tin Music & Arts (formerly Taylor John's House), Leicester Row, Coventry, West Midlands, CV14BN Presenters, event details, maps here.

Being Funny When You're Really Not That Funny

"If you can make them laugh -- bring joy, happiness, connect with them -- it's worth it." Zainal Bostaman, engineer by day and stand-up comic by night, talks about how he began his comic career (miserably) and after several hits and misses, reached a point where people can properly laugh at his jokes. In "Being Funny When You're Really Not That Funny" from PKN Bandar Seri Begawan Vol. 2, we see that he now holds comedy workshops and teaches others on how to be funny when they think they're not really that funny.

PechaKucha Maastricht contributes € 1200 to PechaKucha Global Fund

Mission accomplished!  We at PechaKucha Maastricht are delighted to announce that we have been able to deliver a €1200 contribution to the Global PechaKucha Fund, as a token of gratitude for all the help and good services received from the global PechaKucha organisation in Tokyo over the years. For each ticket sold in 2014-2015, we reserved €1 for the Fund, which was established to support the many initiatives coordinated by the PechaKucha team in Tokyo, including the global PechaKucha website, where each one of the more than 800 PechaKucha cities in the world is able to host its own city page.  PechaKucha Maastricht is very grateful for the exposure it has consistently received on the global PechaKucha website. It has already been selected twice as city of the week, due to the quality of our speakers' presentations, and many of these have been featured as Presentation of the Day on the global PechaKucha homepage. This has been greatly appreciated by our speakers, who saw their ideas and projects being shared with an even bigger worldwide audience. The perfect occasion to personally hand over our contribution came at the end of June when I had the opportunity to travel to Tokyo for professional reasons. What's more, it turned out that the dates of my trip coincided precisely with the date of the PechaKucha event in Tokyo! There were more than 300 PechaKucha fans at Super Deluxe that night and the atmosphere in the room was both relaxed and energetic, with everyone talking and connecting with one another, enjoying the great music by DJ bemsha and eager to listen to the speakers of the night. I particularly enjoyed meeting the Tokyo team - Mark Dytham, Astrid Klein, Johnny Linnert, Mariko Yokogi, Don Kratzer and Brian Scott Peterson - with whom I have been so closely in touch by email but, except for Mark, never spoken face to face!     My turn to present came in the second half of the night. I was introduced both in Japanese and in English by PechaKucha founders Mark and Astrid, who said how pleased they were to welcome a city organiser of PechaKucha Maastricht in Tokyo. In my presentation, I spoke about my family story, including my Japanese origins and I explained why PechaKucha was so important in my life in Maastricht.  When the last slide of my presentation appeared on the screen, I produced the cardboard revealing the donation from the PechaKucha Maastricht community and the entire audience cheered and applauded with enthusiasm. The effect of surprise was complete and Mark and Astrid could not conceal their emotion when they received our contribution. They explained to the audience how much this financial support meant for the PechaKucha organisation and how much it would enhance the Global Fund's ability to develop innovative ways to share the creativity of the PechaKucha community with the world. It was an unforgettable night in Tokyo. And yes, I agree with our friends in Tokyo: PechaKucha Maastricht rocks!   With thanks to Brian for the great pictures!

Let the fun begin

I found Pechakucha years ago but one thing after another got in the way and my opportunites to attend and host have alluded me.  Now for whatever reason, it feels good to be able to take up this challenge this year.  I have lots of anxieties about this as well as excitiment, will I get enough people to present? what if its only my hubby and the local cat as attendees? what if i cant find a regular venue? what if what if what?   I do have to put into practice now that well known moto "if you dont ask you dont get".  As I write this I am setting up the logistics before I can go wild and advertise, Facebook - Check, Twitter - Check, Pechakucha Milton Keynes page set - almost complete .. a little more info needed.  arghhhhhhhhhhh I'm so excited !!
