Gothenburg Celebrates Diversity

The following is a guest post from PechaKucha Night in Gothenburg organizer Jesper Larsson -- you can read a more detailed version of the message in Swedish here.PechaKucha Gothenburg – celebrating diversity since 2006 The image of Sweden — famous for our middle-ground politics, generous immigration policies and reputation for tolerance — basically changed over night on September 19th when the far-right and anti-immigrantSweden Democrats were voted into Sweden's parliament and the neo-nazi Party of the Swedes got a seat in Grästorp Municipality council, making them the first national socialist party to get any mandate in a Swedish political assembly since the 1940s. Welcome to the suburb In Gothenburg we had planned to temporarily move one of our events to the suburbs prior to the election, but now it undeniably feels more important than ever. So in an attempt to break out of our inner-city bubble we are moving our next PechaKucha event to the Gothenburg suburb of Angered. Our hope is to counteract segregation and create a win-win situation by inspiring to new meetings and collaborations. Another form of bubble If it's anything we should have learned from the latest financial bubble, it's that nobody is unaffected by a crises in our globalized world – that everyone is interconnected and that isolation is no sustainable solution. Despite this we see a growing segregation in most societies all over the world. Let's do what we can to change this trend, and instead celebrate diversity.

Candidates to Use the PechaKucha Format

Who says the 20x20 PechaKucha format can't work for politicians? PechaKucha Night in Aalen organizer Thomas Maile sends word of an interesting use of the format, read more below:In our part of Germany, Baden-Württemberg, we have in a few weeks an election for a new parliament. For our home region, we have five candidates who are vying to become a member of parliament. Through our local newspaper, we are organizing a PechaKucha Night for politics. All the candidates will give a PechaKucha presentation to talk about their views and their party. Following the presentations, we are planning a discussion session with visitors. The event happens this coming Monday (February 28) -- here's the event page, and here are more details in German, as published in the Schwabische Post. And take note that the next regular PKN in Aalen, Vol. 6, will happen on March 25 at Freudenschmaus -- you'll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.

The Work of Crofton & Benjamin Architects, Electronic Artists Eternity Brothers, and a Special PKN for Ekaterinburg

Presentations Leon Conradie is an experienced architectural academic, who is doing his Masters Research on "The Work of Crofton & Benjamin Architects: 1955 -1964." Crofton & Benjamin Architects were prolific in the 50s and 60s on beachfront developments, and have designed many iconic Durban buildings, each with an Art Deco style. In his presentation (from PKN Durban Vol. 7), Leon gives us a tour of these buildings, and points out their unique quirks. Pavel Fila is an IT specialist, programmer, and also organiser of the "Šramlfest" festival. In his presentation (in Czech, from PKN Znojmo Vol. 1), he talks about Eternity Brothers, a local group of VJs and electronic artists, and shares some of their work. Posters Today's addition to the Tumblr blog is the poster for the upcoming PKN Ekaterinburg Vol. 6 (pictured above), which will be part of the The Second Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary Art, an important event on the city's cultural agenda. It will also be the first time a PKN in Ekaterinburg is themed, with all presentations tied to art -- below, more details on the event:This time PechaKucha Night Ekaterinburg invites everyone to think about contemporary art during the parallel program of The Second Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary art. We wonder if there is some place for modern art in modern person`s life? You can tell there about your personal experience, projects, interests or ideas in the field of modern art. We try to find the answer if it is necessary to be an artist to make art? Do you make art? Does your art have a target? What do you what from contemporary art as a consumer? How are your projects connected with art? Photos Take a look at last week's PKN Singapore Vol. 5 courtesy of this photo gallery [Facebook]. As organizer Jon Siegel tells us, it was a fantastic event with a great turnout (close to 300) and a terrific lineup of presenters. Above, a look at part of the crowd, and presenter Jon "Yongfook" Cockle.  Calendar We kick off the week with tonight's (September 10) PKN Muscat Vol. 2, and tomorrow you can catch Toronto's Vol. 17.

According to her conception of design, fashion, photography, architecture, music and beauty are all in spirational. But she is also concerned with the practical elements of design. For this reason, Dai has dedicate herself to designing the most suitable glasses, particularly for Asians with lower noses. In addition to sharing her unique design concepts, Emily Dai also shared photos of GenicEyewear’s different product styles, incorporating retro shapes, flamboyant colours and textures. Dai says: “Good design must be personalised.”Her workshop’s stated aim is “to build glasses that belong to the owner.”Customers need only spend a couple of hours and curtesy of Genic Eyewear, they will have their own unique pair of glasses. If you think the designer's creativity is only limited to the production field then you are wrong. The design of a good business model is one of the specialties of Zheng Lei's design team. Electronic product penetration in all aspects of modern life, from computers toexternal hard drives.   Lei showed 20 pictures to share the idea of design as a philosophy for life, including a notebook computer compatible with all powersystems. Lei believes execution is critical, promoting efficient high-qualityfinish right down the line, from design to production to sales In Li Cheng's view "uncertainty" is not simply design’s spirit, it is also design’s roots. In a developing, ever-changing society, if modern people hold on to a primitive ideas we won’t be able to adapt to contemporary life and the new environment. The demands of human beings are gradually evolving as time changes, through the "uncertainty" of life. Li Cheng considers that this is a major issue for designers.   "With the development of society, products must exceed our expectations of the past,” says Li. Showing examples of his innovations, Li advocates that designers must continuously exceed the expectations of customers and never try to define or pigeonhole who their customers are. William Wei’s presentation concerned the rhetoric question “Why We Design?” What is the purpose of design? Wei promotes a rigorous scientific way of thinking with perfectionism in every aspect of his design.     Wei held-up “pure design" and“commercial design" as conceptual examples, showing images of an electronic product, the internal components visible through a transparent shell, arguing that without a cover, the product is in a pure state. “Business should not be avoided” Wei warns the audience as "whatever you do the consumer must pay for it”. Wei view’s views are very straightforward noting the cost of raw materials is not high. But Wei enhances the value of the product bydesign to bring a unique user-experience to people.   Touching the future with design is a perspective Wei Ming upholds believing in the great mission of the future and of the technology that will build it. Wei notes that modern people and communication tools are already inseparable asking what if there are 3D mobile phones in the future? It is this kind of visionary thinking that won Wei the Red Dot Design Award. 记住第二十一期吱吱喳喳读图夜的日期! 9月20日在欢乐海岸小巴黎餐厅吱吱喳喳读图夜与第一届香港深圳设计双年展 关注我们的官方微信的帐户:Riptide锐态   Mark the date for PKN Volume #21! Gender and the General Election

"Politicians do not put enough commitment to the issues that really affect women."In Gender and the General Election, from Huddersfield, Vol. 14, Coco Toma, Vice President Communication and Democracy at the Huddersfield Student Union, looks at developing women's engagement with politics in the 21st century. She takes us back in history to women's suffrage, and on through to the eyes of some of her hero's Rosa Parks, Aung San Suu Kyi, and others, discussing how they have helped been pioneers in many of the political issues woman have faced.

We are SOLD OUT! Vol 10 Pecha Kucha Night 'HOME'

In just a few days we will be heading along to the Geffrye Museum on Kingsland Road in Shoredtich for a wonderful evening of inspiring talks and we have now reached full capacity. The wonderful venue, the Geffrye Museum will be buzzing with 200 plus people! As a reminder about what is happening on 12 May at the Geffrye Museum -  This time around we have the theme "Home". It will totally up to the presenters interpretations of what they talk about - what "Home" means to them. With housing numbers and social housing a key concern for England's future; what the term "Home" really means is most definitely a personal perspective. Everyone has a different idea and varying experience of "Home", depending on where it is, who owns it, and what they do in it. Also, we think Home is topical subject for the month of May, given the mayoral election will have just taken place on 5 May 2016. ‘Home’ - a place where you long to go back to, longed to leave. Is it house, a yurt, a caravan or are you just a long way away from it. It is the one global thing we all share, no matter what our race, income or religion, we all want a place we can call ‘Home’. Further the venue of the Geffrye Museum - the Museum of the Home, which explores the home from 1600 to the present day has also influenced the choice of this theme. We can't wait to see you there!
