Literary Dundee

Anna Day is the Director of Literary Dundee, and she is publishing manager of Dundee University Press and co-founded Playroom Press with her husband, Chris Collins. Chris is a book designer. The first Playroom Press book, Dundee 123, is a counting book for cool kids using Dundee's landmarks.

In their presentation, Anna and Chris chat about their love of all things lit and their new book, Dundee 123.

Vivomotion

Mhairi Towler is founder and creative director of the animation production company, Vivomotion, based in Dundee. The company offers a service of bespoke animations for scientific communication. Mhairi integrates a background in science with animation skills in order to use visual and 3D methodologies to communicate science to a wider audience.

In her presentation, Mhairi explains how she has combined her passion for science and animation together into her business, Vivomotion.

 Siôn Parkinson shares the gruesome yet fascinating history and characteristics of the ever-vital body part, the neck. With Siôn's comedic performance, this will be a presentation you won't want to miss. 

Siônis an artist, singer and producer. His performances often see him appearing in costume to invoke the voice of an animal, variously a burning elephant, a stuffed walrus, a lovelorn worm, and most recently a seal who talks and vomits. His work as a producer for Cape Farewell’s ‘Sea Change’ project took him to the Isle of Mull where he was Creative Director of Exhibitions for Comar, a role that in turn inspired his return to Dundee, the city in which he was born. He is producer of the inaugural Dundee Design Festival 2016. @sionparkinson

Solo Sketches of the Skeleton Coast

Marzhan, a photojournalist, was invited to shoot a photo story on the Skeleton Coast, one of the most deserted place on earth. Her talk is about how the desert spoke to her in times of need through shipwrecks, lonesome animals on the dunes, footprints, colours, and abandoned airplanes.

Grids and Circles in Our World, Student Life at a Technical University, and Photos from Samara and Toledo

Presentations Fran Ward sees grids and circles in the world around her. As she explains in her presentation (from PKN Williamsburg Vol. 2), she uses those references to make sense of that world and her place in it. In their shared presentation (in Czech, from PKN Usti nad Labem Vol. 2), Marek Hudáč and Matyáš Fialka talk about what it's like being a 1st grade architecture student at the Technical University of Liberec, and describe the atmosphere of the school's huge studio. Now an instructor at Cambridge University, Jonathan Baldwin talks about growing up in the 1970s, and the formative impact a certain Doctor had on his young life. In this edition of Presentation of the Day, (from PKN Dundee, Scotland Vol. 5) Jonathan relates to us some of the life lessons he learned while watching Doctor Who. One among these words of wisdom was the idea that one must nurture his/her imagination, ingenuity, and creativity -- it was this notion and many others that led him to become the man he is today.
