Lauren has danced with internationally acclaimed ballet companies including San Francisco Ballet and New York City Ballet, and holds a BA from New School.

PKN Maastricht Vol. 2

The city of Maastricht recently hosted its second PechaKucha Night, again with a terrific lineup of presenters -- you can view streaming video of all the presentations here. Organizer Martijn Kagenaar reports. After the overwhelming success of PKN’s January debut in Maastricht, our audience didn’t have to wait long for a new PKN. March 20th, about 250 visitors saw speakers from six nations: Australia, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, USA, and even some from the Netherlands. In AINSI, 1 kilometer from Belgium and 20 kilometers from Germany, an international crowd got together for 12 presentations. They saw and heard about life in the roof gutter, singing bridges, and a journey to the moon. Maastricht’s mayor was delighted, as was the well known writer of "The Creative City," Charles Landry. He was our very special guest, hosted by Mrs. Odile Wolfs, cultural delegate at the Province of Limburg. The day after, we were her guests in a masterclass at TEFAF, the world’s leading Art Fair in Maastricht. Charles inspired his Maastricht students for one day to think about crossing borders in order to become a real creative region. Maastricht is a candidate to be Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018. Another fun part of PKN Maastricht is the PechaKitchen, which Martijn describes as the "speakers-only after party: a cooking workshop, a few weeks after the event. There we can look back on the presentations, look forward, and make further plans to co-operate with each other." Below, photos from the event -- see more in this Flickr photoset. The DIY – Do It Yourself theme for the evening event will feature speakers in professional photography, street art, wok cooking, independent radio, and hologram technology. Adding to the mix, for the first time ever, speakers will offer their products and services for the best barter they get from the guest audience.

For the Love of Astronomy, Inspiring People to Cook Through Workshops, and a Tease from Chelmsford

Presenters In his presentation (from PKN Hyderabad Vol. 9), Neil Ghosh shares his love for astronomy, and takes us on a tour that covers different aspects of the science, tying it to his own personal learning of it. Julia Bondarchuk is the owner of the cookery club and shop Edoque, and in her presentation (in Russian, from PKN St. Petersburg Vol. 20) she talks about her cooking parties and workshops, where cooking turns to a game, using culinary construction sets. The master classes and workshops have the goal of inspiring people to cook and to save time when doing so. PechaKucha new year event now a tradition at Maastricht School of Management

Following the success of last year’s PechaKucha event to welcome the New Year at MSM, three groups from the MBA31 class once again bravely accepted the challenge to present their dreams, projects and visions to staff, friends, and MSM’s local partners and stakeholders by using the powerful PechaKucha format. Devised by Klein Dytham Architecture in Tokyo in 2003 as a fast-paced presentation format to showcase new ideas, the PechaKucha concept is simple yet effective: each speaker shows 20 slides, each for 20 seconds. PechaKucha events are now happening in 800 cities across the globe and have grown into valued platforms for inspiration, creativity and networking. On Friday 16 January, four beautiful African business-minded women : Ms. Rebecca Freda Namagga (Uganda), Ms. Amina Mahamudu Serwenda (Tanzania), Ms. Oluwabunmi Folowosele and  Ms. Olanike Omobolanle Ojo (both from Nigeria) shared their entrepreneurial ambitions and shared their visions on women empowerment in Africa with great conviction. They were followed by Yosief Iyassu (Eritrea), Emmanuel Balele (Tanzania) and James Bamwete (Uganda) who described the deplorable health and environment effects caused by the use of inefficient traditional charcoal cooking stoves in Africa and showed how the situation could considerably improve by replacing them with energy saving clay-based cooking stoves. Presenting last, Eleftheria Sitara from Greece gave a very personal story of her journey into the MBA program at MSM and how studying with fellow students from 22 different nationalities has brought a new meaning to the word “beauty” for her. Eleftheria said she found it an unforgettable learning experience: “When I first heard about the PechaKucha concept, I thought of a double-edged sword. Based on the power of images – that sometimes may be equal to a thousand words – PechaKucha allows presenters to express themselves concisely but still in a rich and creative way. The greatest challenge though is picking up the appropriate structure and content for your presentation in order to deliver your message to the audience in the most efficient way. My idea was to present a topic regarding ‘beauty’ and the unexpected ways in which I discovered it through my experiences. The reason I selected it was because I wanted to present not only a brief description of my personal attitude towards life, but also because I wanted to express publicly my gratitude for all the precious moments I am currently sharing with my international classmates. Although in the beginning I was thinking that the PechaKucha challenge was far too fresh and uncomfortable for me to engage in, from the moment I entered the room I felt an immediate friendliness. During my presentation I saw people’s nods and smiles, showing that they were eager to listen to what I was saying. That sense of encouragement from the audience to whom you express your inner ideas is a remarkable feeling that can hardly be forgotten. Relying on the inspiring feedback I received from people telling me how much they were touched and surprised by the spirit created through the single means of a presentation, I would definitely recommend to everyone to try the PechaKucha experience even just for once in their lifetime.” Just like last year, the audience enthusiastically reacted to the students’ presentations. The event was followed by a friendly and relaxed network session in the Business Lounge with all participants.

In “Tadaku” which happens to also be the name of their service, from PKN Tokyo Vol. 121, we hear not only about home-cooking, but also some fascinating facts about food from all over the world.

We're so close to the PechaKucha Lilongwe event! Here are a few presenter bios to give you a taste of what's cooking for tomorrow night. Happy Wednesday! Jessica(for the PKN Lilongwe Team) Alana is an African literature nerd having just finished her Masters in African literature in Canada. With a passion for gender and health and having lived in Tanzania for some time, she is testing out Malawi working with MUSCCO. She will be talking about her sister. Dennis is a tourism and media entrepreneur, social media, artists and events manager. Also manages Uwawuke Bicycle Tours of Lilongwe. He will be talking about "Experiencing Lilongwe Townships on 2 wheels" Kondwani is a Cofounder of Ctech Systems Limited an ICT company more into software development and web services, and founder of GiantPlus which deals with logistics,tourism and finance. He will talk about game shakers. Kuda was born in Zimbabwe but has lived most of her life in East Africa. She is passionate about sports and fashion.  Class of BMIS 2016. She will be talking about cancer awareness.   Chaitali is a consultant working in water and environment sector. Living in Malawi from more than two years. She will be sharing how the idea of "being home" changed in her life (eventually :)

The Rabbit Hole of Puppet Making

"I'll talk about the surprisingly deep rabbit hole that is puppet making, and my creative tumble down it." A graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, Clay Achee has studied and worked in the film and television industry for over 10 years. His other hobby? Cooking? Golf? Nah, he makes puppets.
