Radiant and Brighter
BY PHEONA MATOVU
@ VOL 26
ON NOV 26, 2015
Pheona and Micheal Matovu experienced many challenges when they relocated from Uganda to Scotland. Unable to work due to immigration controls, they were dependent on churches, family and friends for their daily needs. Through finding themselves in this situation they discovered that many immigrants face similar and sometimes worse difficulties. They also realised that there were very few organisations dedicated to offering the kind of practical help that would make a lasting difference.
They made a decision to do something about it and that something was Radiant and Brighter, which became a Community Interest Company in 2014. Radiant and Brighter helps individuals to become their very best with career counselling, employment support, mentoring sessions and intensive workshops. They believe that everyone is uniquely gifted and, with the right support, has the ability to change their lived reality.

Flyer for PKN Brighton Vol. 7
PechaKucha Night in Brighton Vol. 7 may have happened last week, but we do like to keep track here of flyers and posters that are being produced for PKNs worldwide, and so here's a look at Brighton's latest contribution. Let's also mention that PKN Brighton Vol. 8 is set to happen June 16 at Phoenix Brighton.
Brighton in June
The next PechaKucha Night in Brighton (Vol. 8) is going to happen June 16 at Phoenix Brighton. The photos included in this post are from one of the previous Brighton PKNs, that organizer Branwen Lorigan sent us for inclusion in the "city loop." What's that you ask? The PechaKucha city loop is the collection of photos from PK cities around the world that you see usually before the event and during the beer break. It currently includes a photo from over 170 of the PK cities, and we keep adding to it as we get new cities (with a photo) to add.
PKN Brighton Vol. 12
Brighton held its PechaKucha Night Vol. 12 earlier this month -- above, the poster for the event -- and here's a great rundown of all of the presentations that took part, by Eugene McCloskey. You'll also find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.
A Creative Community for Designers in Sydney, Living with Schizophrenia, and a PKN in Brighton
Presentations In this presentation (from PKN Sydney Vol. 21) by Anna Lise de Lorenzo you'll find out all about &company, a project that gives emerging designers the opportunity to build their design experience within a creative community. They provide mentoring, facilitate production with local craftspeople and manufacturers, and take care of the marketing and distribution of the design. &company is on a mission to give designers a leg-up as they develop into capable and confident professionals. Not just for designers, the new Pop-Up premises in The Rocks invites anyone in to come and make something in the workshop, learn new skills in a class, or check out the work by their designers in the gallery and store. Poet and rapper Pablo Xavier suffers from schizophrenia, but he feels much better now. Through poetry and images, he explains how hard it has been. A very personal and touching presentation (in French, from PKN Lausanne Vol. 9). Posters We have two new posters on the Tumblr blog today, first for PKN London Vol. 7 (pictured above), and then for PKN Gainesville Vol. 4, which are happening on June 28 and 29 respectively. Photos We have one set of photos to share with you today, taken at last week's PKN Brighton Vol. 11 -- you're seeing one of those photos above. Of course, you can always find plenty of other event photos on our PechaKucha Night Flickr account. Calendar Back from the weekend, you can start your week with tonight's PKN Rotterdam Vol. 30. Tomorrow (June 26), you can look for the following two events: PKN Amersfoort Vol. 7 and PKN Buenos Aires Vol. 25.

When Woody took up the banton of producing the regular PechaKucha Nights in Brighton, back in 2015, it was decided that a new mascot should be featured at the start of the evenings. So far, there's be 'Astro Boy' turning himself invisible for Volume 20's 'Japan Brighton' Night; a locally grown walnut befitting both the 'Good Grub' themed event but also perfect for explaining what PechaKucha is - "in a nutshell PechaKucha is just that - what people do + love condensed in to 6minutes 40"; a neon yellow birthday candle celebrating PechaKucha turning 13; a compass for Volume 25 Getting Around; a collective of images for 'All Together'. Woody says she knows what the next mascot will be for the first of Brighton's 2017 events called 'Re: Re: Re:' but for now she's keeping it under her hat. Could it be that? Join the Brighton crew on 25th January for Volume 26 to find out.
