@ VOL 1 ON JUL 04, 2014

Frank Lorenz, hobby photographer and communications coach, has always been a big fan of anything 3D since 2010.  Once having seen such a photo, he knew he had to buy a 3D camera and take such photos himself.  He is never without his camera and persuades his friends to view his photos whenever possible.  Having this camera has made him see his world in a new light and given those places a different point of reference and angle.

Shaping Space and Realities

@ VOL 4 ON MAY 18, 2015

"What I find funny is the idea that doomsday preppers think they can inoculate themselves from effects of an apocalypse by collecting things we have manufactured in the last 100 years to protect themselves from the future, but in fact what we need more are tools and solutions to overcome the quandary that the demise of our species is at our own hands."

In Shaping Space and Realities from PechaKucha Night Brooklyn Vol. 4, self-proclaimed design evangelist, educator, and promoter of play Lauren Slowik explores the infinite possibilities of shaping space and realities with advancing 3-d printing technology to create new physical connections. Join her as she goes deep into the rabbit hole of how our future can be reimagined with a shift in thinking.

This was "Presentation of the Day" on Thursday, September 10th, 2015.

3D Printing & Mass Customization

Matt Compeau and Bi-Ying Miao of Hot Pop Factory are very aware of the fact that digital fabrication technologies like 3D printing are becoming mainstream. In this edition of Presentation of the Day (from PKN Toronto Vol. 20), they discuss the emerging new movement; one where you'll be able to design every object you own, from your kitchen knives to your cell phone. This is the new industrial revolution, a transition from mass-production to mass-customization.

3D Printing Biology

In today's Presentation of the Day, "3D Printing Biology" from PKN Miami Vol. 26, we hear from Corrie Van Sice, who works at the intersection of design, engineering, and biology. Corrie has used 3D-printing technology to engineer proto-cells (structures that look like real cells -- they include a nucleus and cell walls -- but not made from anything living).  She speaks on the under-discussed dilemma of "innovation" run amok and posits that if more scientists were to operate like artists (in that they could explore their studies without university or corporate control), development in their field might take new and exciting direction.
