(Un)Conventional Wisdom – Going Against the Grain

PRESENTED ON MAR 29, 2018
IN HUNTSVILLE @ VOL 5

While researching 18th century mechanical tables by J. F. Oeben [pronounced O-Ben], J. Leko has been nearly kicked-out of such notable museums as the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Cognacq-Jay, Musée de Nissim de Camondo, and the Louvre (Paris), Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London). Actually, the Louvre did turn him away, come to think of it…

He occasionally teaches others and accepts commissions to build things for people that require far too much time!

Design Against Crime

BY SPIKE SPONDIKE
@ VOL 1 ON NOV 09, 2009

Can the design of shop furniture, products, packaging, retail space large and small, display areas, security procedures, retail management and the myriad of other factors in this environment – even the experience of shopping itself – reduce shoplifting and improve ambiance without turning a small newsagent or a large department store into Alcatraz?

Going Against the Crisis

BY DESPOINA POLYZOIDOU
@ MSM GOES PECHAKUCHA ON MAR 17, 2017

Despoina Polyzoidou shows how the economic crisis in Greece has triggered a new era for the primary sector of the country. In order to find ways to cope with economic challenges, her fellow countrymen are not staying idle but rather focus more and more on agriculture, forestry, fishing and mining to create special, top quality, branded products as a way to fight the crisis.

Despoina is concerned about her country and wants to share "views from inside" because she feels that the media sometimes distorts information and only emphasises the negative sides of a situation.

Despite the crisis, she believes, there is always hope and room for positive actions.

2nd Hand Scenery

BY MATTHEW DOOLAN
@ VOL 31 ON APR 20, 2017

"Can you imagine that in a school playground? It would be a wonderful thing to have. At the moment, it's sitting in a landfill."

From "2nd Hand Scenery" from PechaKucha Night Glasgow Vol. 31Matthew Doolan presents 2nd Hand Scenery, a fledgling organization based in Glasgow that aims to find creative ways to help the Scottish entertainment sector reduce the amount of scenery, props, and furniture going to landfill once a production cycle has finished. 2nd Hand Scenery's primary goal is to connect the different elements of the industry with one another, to let the school drama club see what the National Company no longer needs and to facilitate the exchange, to let amateur dramatics groups share a show and to make it as easy as possible for companies and individuals to display their used items before they run out of time and space.

It was founded by two scenic carpenters who after many years in the industry had become dismayed a the sheer volume of useful materials that are lost due to relentless production cycles and crushing time pressures inherent across the sector. So they decided that something had to be done about it.
