From plastic bags to pesticides - most of the waste we produce on land eventually reaches the oceans, either through deliberate dumping or from run-off through drains and rivers. Surfboards are 100% toxic, but there are sustainable surf craft options that can replace these toxic products. Cobus Joubert explains.

ON JUL 21, 2017
"When I'm at the factory, I'm completely switched on. I'm almost not thinking about anything... I'm almost like a man possessed until I can reach that image that's in my head..."
In "A PhD in Surfboards" from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Summer Party - Curated by MINI, Ben Wei (Wavecraft) shares his unique hybrid surf and skateboard designs which stem from his lifelong passions of surfing and skateboarding.
Ben is a surfboard shaper, artist, and musician originally from Oceanside, California now residing in Chiba. After falling in love with the country and its people, he decided to move from California to stay in one of Japan’s professional surfing meccas Ichinomiya, 8 years ago. Growing up in a surf shop, Ben basically earned a PhD in surfboards and wavecraft but after becoming dissatisfied with traditional board designs, he taught himself to shape so that he could bring a new breed of board into the market which he sells in his own shop in Tokyo.
