Should We Love Robots?

PRESENTED ON SEP 28, 2017
IN MANCHESTER @ VOL 19

Dr. Scott Midson is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The Lincoln Theological Institute. He is the lead researcher on ‘Living with and Loving Machines’. This project brings together questions about how we understand humans and technologies in their relationships, and seeks to encourage an alternative way of reflecting on these using the theological notion of ‘love’.

In this talk he explores how theological and religious ideas shape how we ineract, and even love, robots.

Robots: A Step in the Evolution of "Design with Purpose"

BY MICHAEL WIENEN
@ VOL 4 ON SEP 29, 2015

Michael Wienen states that, as an adjective, robotic has come to describe mundane repetition of actions completely void of creative thought. It's ironic that robots, actual robots, have inspired thousands of local youth to dive into the waters of creativity...swimming deeply and coming back for more. High-tech robotics programs have proven themselves locally as an effective educational lure. We'll see how "high technology" accounts for less of the lure than we thought and how applied creativity is the real reward these students are drawn to. This hypothesis is spawning a new generation of local educational programming.
