The Art of Abstract Comics

BY KYM TABULO
@ VOL 18 ON AUG 24, 2016

Kym Tabulo works in the field of abstract comics.  This is an emerging 21st century genre that combines the conventions of traditional comics with abstract painting.  Kym creates works on canvas and paper using a range of formats, scales, techniques and media. Her pioneering work experiments with the idea that dynamic, organic movement and growth can be conveyed in a single image or a sequence of images, to create a sense of movement that also suggests the passage of time. Her process is a combination of intuitive and planned art making. The intention of her work is to generate a visual rhythm rather than tell a story, however others may wish to invent their own story or find a theme.

Photo Album of Paintings

BY MAMATJAN JUMA
@ VOL 1 ON MAR 15, 2018

Mamatjan Juma is an artist who was trained in the style of Socialist Realism, in which ideology was paramount. He began questioning this notion and exploring more abstract styles after his move to the United States. Through "snapshots" of his paintings, he shows the development of his style, where beauty, balance, and limitlessness are expressed without the need to stand for an ideology.

Art Follows Life

BY TESSA HECK
@ VOL 4 ON APR 05, 2018

Art can lead all over the place. It has led painter Tessa Heck from the rural to the urban (and back again), from the noncommercial to the monetary, from introspection to examination. Sometimes art is a journey and, as Tessa's story shows, sometimes that journey leads home. And sometimes it's a journey walked in red cowboy boots.
