Posture/Gesture: Paintings of Laurie Lisonbee

PRESENTED ON SEP 25, 2018
IN BRYAN @ VOL 16

Laurie Lisonbee shows artworks of the human figure in yoga postures as metaphors for states of being. Depictions of bodily contortions and mudras of the hand are crafted into relic-like objects.  From art historical sources, junk piles, and yoga practice, Lisonbee derives a painting process akin to devotional meditation.

@ VOL 1 ON MAR 15, 2018

Mamatjan Juma is an artist who was trained in the style of Socialist Realism, in which ideology was paramount. He began questioning this notion and exploring more abstract styles after his move to the United States. Through "snapshots" of his paintings, he shows the development of his style, where beauty, balance, and limitlessness are expressed without the need to stand for an ideology.
