Caro and Mike

Memory Space

CREATED ON APRIL 19, 2010
IN BERLIN

Caro and Mike did a live performance with tape recorder, voice and sound effects: An audio visual work in progress about isolation and memory of the human body & spirit in the context of empty, abandoned spaces and places. They used the setting of a former Russian military base in the town of Wünsdorf to re-tell their story of ghosts that reappear in the form of voices, images and sounds. Kind of spooky!

"Ballad Of The Lonely Fish"

BY DANIELLE DE PICCIOTTO + ALEXANDER HACKE
IN BERLIN

Danielle de Picciotto and Alexander Hacke are an American-German artist couple living in Berlin and New York. Painter, illustrator, filmaker and musician Danielle presented some of her drawings and images of the couple's latest tours and performances at our cosy PKN Haiti in Berlin. This presentation was a first debut of Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto's latest song called "Ballad Of The Lonely Fish". With Alexander being the lead guitarist of the legendary industrial rock & Avant-garde band Einstürzende Neubauten, we were extremely honored to have such a "piece of music history" as guests in our humble home. www.hacke.org www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einst%C3%BCrzende_Neubauten www.danielledepicciotto.com

Liegewiese

BY RYO BORDINI CHIKUSHI
IN BERLIN

Ryotaro Bordini Chikushi opened PKN Haiti in Berlin with a heartwarming presentation about the "Liegewiese", a very large lounger he re-designed and built himself in homage to the original custom made piece his Italian father invented during Ryotaro's childhood. A presentation about heritage. It was great to see how the guests fell in love with this piece of furniture (which they actually lounged on all together) after they heard the whole story about it. www.bordinichikushi.net

My Haircuts

BY RAOUL ZÖLLNER
IN BERLIN

Raoul Zöllner - joined in spontaneously for Haiti and decided to talk about his Afro-German heritage and his haircuts - or to be more precise about the haircuts he had or the looks he wanted to have "at the age of 12" (for some reason he seems to remain twelve years old for a pretty long time....). Funny, chaotic, lovely! www.keinbedarfannichts.com

Reconnecting to the Universe

BY KINGA KIELCZYNSKA
@ VOL 16 ON DEC 15, 2009

Kinga Kielczynska disguises her sculptures, graphic and performance art as a talk about "a secret cult, that is trying to reconnect to the universe". Having lost the togetherness of man and nature, Kinga travels to energetic locations with other "cult members" to perform rites and exercises to be one with nature. The fact that they steal a lamp from the hotel lobby to channel the sun's energy seems natural. Sensual, profound and ... funny!

In between

BY JOACHIM FROST
IN BERLIN

Joachim Frost's work explores the space between architecture and art. The "in between" is what excites him most. This talk was composed of inspiring quotes, a selection of some of Joachim's projects and products and also a bench he built in Oshika, Japan in the middle of the woods. Joachim brought some art objects he created that day together with his 6 year old daughter Willy, which went on sale after the presentations - all money raised went straight to Haiti. Amazing how these little art pieces encouraged all guests, who already donated, to donate again - and to take something very precious home. Thank you, Joachim! www.stiks.de

The Beginning of Memory

BY MIGUEL GUITART, PH.D.
@ VOL 14 ON NOV 17, 2015

"The story of Buffalo is inextricably linked to the notion of memory. That memory is now in Danger."

In The Beginning of Memory from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 14, Spanish architect and academic Miguel Guitart remembers the importance of Buffalo's signature past and visual legacy that has made the city unique, and compels the audience to slow down enough to observe it for themselves, together on a quest to find it's soul once more. In this beautiful poetic performance, he shares a series of ephemeral photos of the city, titled "Americana" with music by Philippe Rombi and excerpts of Laurie Anderson's "The Beginning of Memory", illustrating that despite PechaKucha's fixed format, presentations can take all forms.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015.

A Brief Memoir of Architectural Space

BY JOANNA GILLESPIE
@ VOL 17 ON SEP 15, 2016

"This is my 6-minute memoir. A mediation on impermanence."

In A Brief Memoir of Architecural Space from PechaKucha Buffalo vol. 17, independent arts consultant and co-organizer of PechaKucha Buffalo, Joanna Gillespie, delivers a meditation on twenty of the fifty places she has lived since birth. From Victorian-era structures in Buffalo, NY and San Francisco, CA, to the wilds of the 1970's California coast, to modern and efficient rural Japan, to a Postmodern art utopia in Maine, and beyond, Gillespie recounts a particular memory from each space. Through all of the temporal landscapes we find ourselves in, Gillespie concludes, "We forge on, either clumsily or assuredly. We keep on keeping on." Even if we move fifty times.

Drawing space

BY GREIG BURGOYNE
@ VOL 11 ON SEP 06, 2018

Grieg Burgoyne suggests that we are all 'a bundle of rhythms' and, through his exploratory, playful and site-specific drawing practice invites us to reunite with lost spaces, the periphery, the other, the elsewhere.
