Stronger than the Prognosis

BY HEATHER LAPTALO
@ VOL 25 ON MAR 27, 2018

This presentation is about accomplishing great physical feats after being told you never would.

Heather Laptalo is addicted to high altitudes, open vistas and heart-pounding sufferfests that challenge her physically and mentally.  The only time she's not running is when she's skiing or climbing a mountain.  She wasn't always like this.  She grew up wearing back braces and had a spinal fusion and total reconstructive back surgery, all before the age of 20 to stop her scoliosis and kyphosis from getting worse.  85% of her spine is fused and she's missing 40% of her lung capacity, leaving her 20% physically disabled.  She defied all the odds and proven countless doctors wrong.  She's #strongerthantheprognosis

Hot Baths and Cold Calls

BY KATHY BELGE
@ VOL 25 ON MAR 27, 2018

Just a few years ago it seemed like everything was going my way. I was enjoying a successful career as a freelance writer. I was traveling the country speaking and emceeing events such as San Francisco Pride with hundreds of thousands of people cheering and laughing. I was on fire. I was on my path. I was “on.” Yet, there I was a few years later, tying ribbons to balloons at Edible Arrangements for $8/hr. What happened? How did it come to this? And more importantly, what was I going to do to get my life back? This is my comeback story. The two things I did to get my life back.

Curiosity

BY SKYLOR POWELL
@ VOL 25 ON MAR 27, 2018

As kiddos, most of the interactions we have with our surroundings are brand new. A single experience gives us a new answer about the world, and a new subject to ask a million questions about. As adults, the foreign nature of experiences grow fewer and farther between, and our approach changes. Some of us look only for the answer in an experience, so we develop assumptions. Some of us look for the questions, so we get stuck behind our own ignorance. Should we be as bold as we were when we were kids and look for both, we rediscover one of our most valuable assets and perhaps exactly what the US needs most right now: curiosity.
