Deconstructing Masculinity

BY ALLY GONZALO
@ VOL 36 ON NOV 22, 2018

With his work, photographer Ally Gonzalo strives to bring home the idea that men of all shapes, sizes, and colours can be attractive. In photographing his subjects, he endeavours to convey a body-positive message and capture the beauty of those who don't fit within the non-conventional standard. For his talk at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 36, Ally shared how he got his start in photography, how his identity and self-esteem shaped his perspective, and how he decided to take on the challenge of redefining masculinity in his work as a queer person of colour.

Ally's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 36, on November 22 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Perseverance

BY MEL HANSEN
@ VOL 36 ON NOV 22, 2018

Mel Hansen is the host and producer of "EnRoute to Eat", a cooking and camping show that took her and her two colleagues all around the Canadian province of Manitoba to talk food with those who make it happen. In her 20x20 talk, she recounted the story of how she came up with the concept behind the show after realizing that there was a lack of female food presenters on television, and what she came to learn about perseverance through producing the show in the summer of 2018. Photos by Meghan Kjartanson.

Mel's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 36, on November 22 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Where Do I Get My Ideas?

BY BESS HAMILTON
@ VOL 36 ON NOV 22, 2018

Writing is a practice that takes skill, dedication, and inspiration. The last of those three is sometimes hard to come by and it takes a good, steady search and an instinct to know what is or isn't inspiring and interesting enough to both write and read about.

Author Bess Hamilton's debut novel, Remembrance, was published in 2018 and in her PechaKucha Night Winnipeg talk, she talks about her inspirations for the book. Here, she gives us a peek into her brainstorming process for Remembrance, and insight into her style and approach to writing.

Bess' talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 36, on November 22 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Physics in Unexpected Places: An Improvised 20x20 Talk

BY CAITY CURTIS
@ VOL 36 ON NOV 22, 2018

PechaKucha Night Winnipeg challenged improviser Caity Curtis to perform an improvised 20x20 talk, with no prior knowledge of the slides that would project on stage. Before she started, Caity asked for a suggestion from the audience for a topic to frame her talk and chose the subject of "physics". Watch (and laugh) as Caity quickly tries to weave together a compelling talk about physics to the random selection of images put together by the PKN Winnipeg organizing team.

Caity's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 36, on November 22 2018, at the Park Theatre.
