VOL 35

September 06, 2018
@ The Park Theater and Movie Cafe

Let's take this moment to go through a checklist of things that we've done this summer. Get thoroughly sunburnt at a beach or music festival? Yup, did that. Took every opportunity to sit outside at a restaurant establishment? Of course. Made our farmer's tan more severe? Sure have! That leaves only one other thing, then: PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35!

Doors open as usual at 7:30 PM, and the show starts at 8:00 PM.

Admission is pay-what-you-want, but we suggest $10.

[Re-]: The 2018 Winnipeg Design Festival

BY MEIGHAN GIESBRECHT
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

Meighan Giesbrecht and Tia Watson, the Curators of the 2018 Winnipeg Design Festival, have organized this year's five-day celebration of all things design around the theme of "[RE-]". With this theme, they intend to give light to the opportunities of the many underused spaces in and around the City of Winnipeg and have the design community participate in filling in these areas with consciously-designed interventions. Learn more about the theme and the festival itself by taking a listen to this PechaKucha Night Winnipeg talk.

To learn more about the Winnipeg Design Festival, visit their website at http://www.winnipegdesignfestival.net/

Meighan and Tia's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Finding the Light

BY KRIS SORENSEN
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

Photographer Kris Sorensen has spent a good amount of time on the road as a (former) long-haul trucker. To kill time and to help fill a creative void, he brought his camera along to photograph his experience, using light as his muse. Kris uses the practice of photography to not only capture what is fleeting, but also capture beacons of life through darkness.

Kris' talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Face/Value

BY ANDREW BLAIR
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

Artist Andrew Blair is an artist who prefers more traditional media and whose prime subject matter is the human face. His portraits can be described as expressive, both in terms of what the faces show, and in the nuances of his techniques. Andrew walks us through his work and his ideas, and shows us how else he's engaging the community-at-large with his art in this PechaKucha Night Winnipeg talk.

Andrew's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

It's a Squirrelly World

BY DEBBIE VOKEY
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

Debbie Vokey is a photographer who took the PechaKucha Night Winnipeg stage to talk about her latest project, "It's a Squirrelly World", a series of portraits of her small, furry friends: squirrels. For this project, she sets up tiny dioramas of human-like environments and waits for her backyard squirrel pals to come to interact with the scenes. Take a look at these surreal photos that Debbie made and listen as she answers some of the questions she gets about her project.

Debbie's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Kitchen Counterpoint

BY JULIAN BEUTEL
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

And now for something really special.

Musician and composer Julian Beutel had a different idea of how to make use of the PechaKucha Night format. For this "talk", Julian did a live musical performance using a pre-recorded track he composed and did the sound effects right on stage. The piece itself revolves around a central space, the kitchen, and the cast of characters that use it. Julian developed Kitchen Counterpoint in collaboration with Angie Shyr and Seth Boyden.

Julian's performance was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

The Outdoor School

BY REX FERGUSON-BAIRD
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

Rex Ferguson-Baird has an idea on how to fix some of the issues that kids face in life and learning. As the Principal of Brooklands School, Rex believes that the solution is as simple as taking it outside. For this PechaKucha Night Winnipeg talk, Rex talks about the concept and application of the "outdoor school" and the benefits that kids have gained while learning from beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Rex's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Fear, Technology, and Why You Should Be Friends With Me

BY AYLA MANNING
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

Ayla Manning is a student and heritage interpreter at the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, where she dresses and acts as though she's living at Red River in the 1850's. It's a fascinating job that requires you to not only manage answering questions from extremely modern visitors, but also absorb an exorbitant amount of knowledge on how to live without technology. Ayla explains in this PechaKucha Night Winnipeg talk that this knowledge is extremely useful and practical in many situations, including the apocalypse.

Ayla's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.

Design Is...

BY DREW WIEBE
@ VOL 35 ON SEP 06, 2018

Graphic designer and photographer Drew Wiebe has been collecting quotes on the definition of design for the last three years. From this exercise, she hopes to one day figure out what design "is". Although she doesn't have the answer yet, the collection of these quotes exposes some of the attitudes and key ideas behind the practice of design. After watching Drew's talk and reading some of the quotes she has collected, maybe you'll get a better sense of what "Design is..."

Drew's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 35, on September 6, 2018, at the Park Theatre.
