The Challenges of Mid-Rise Construction

BY ROLAND ROM COLTHOFF
@ VOL 26 ON SEP 27, 2013

Roland Rom Colthoff of RAW design explains the opportunities and challeges of new mid-rise construction in Toronto. Mid-rise construction is an investment by purchasers in not only a condo, but also a neighborhood. This affirmation of the importance of the street and urban environment as a place to live, shop, and work has led to the design of unusually shaped and unique interior environments and exceptionally generous outdoor spaces.

The Power of Observation

BY BOB HAMBLY
@ VOL 26 ON SEP 27, 2013

Bob Hambly examines the topic of observation – how we've become visually complacent, how we are manipulated to see certain things, how important it is to have good observational skills, and how we can go about improving them. This is something we can all get better at. And the better we get at observing, the better we will get at generating creative ideas.

Inclusive Design

BY AMY POTHIER
@ VOL 26 ON SEP 27, 2013

Amy Pothier and Jesse Klimitz of Quadrangle Architects want to inspire action in all designers to “Get Better” by designing fully inclusive and accommodating spaces for everyone, regardless of age or ability, to enjoy and experience. Accessible design does not need to be clinical and ugly when accommodating the 1 in 7 persons in Canada that live with some form of a visible or non-visible disability.

Started in 2011 as a group of motivated interns and landscape architects, Sprout’s mandate is to engage local groups in re-imagining their open spaces. Victoria Bell explains that Sprout aims to facilitate community involvement, empower local stakeholders, and create useful dialogue with local landowners, city staff, and councilors, resulting in the improvement of neglected or under-used spaces within our urban fabric.

Virtual vs. Habitable Space

BY VIVIANA DE LOERA
@ VOL 26 ON SEP 27, 2013

Viviana De Loera challenges architects, builders, and designers to compare the virtual “templates” designed by for-profit companies like Google and Facebook to the frenzied condo living, boxed dwellings, and office spaces we exist in every day. What are we teaching the “template generation” in both their virtual and habitable spaces?

BY DEBORAH BURNETT
@ VOL 26 ON SEP 27, 2013

Deborah Burnett discusses how the architectural lighting and interior design of where you spend your days impacts how well you sleep at night, which in turn dramatically impacts your health, productivity, disease formation and sex drive. Celiberty

BY ALEXANDER JOSEPHSON
@ VOL 26 ON SEP 27, 2013

Alexander Josephson of PARTISANS speaks on the importance of liberty in an age wherein "Celebrity" (meaning an individual's imprisonment to the idea of fame alone) is such a strong force in our society, for good or bad. He has coined the word "Celiberty" as a concept that attempts to strike a healthy balance between hollow self-promotion and a legitimate creative struggle to do politically relevant work at its highest calibre.
