VOL 18

June 29, 2013
@ Orokonui Ecosanctuary

Pecha Kucha #18 is a special Midwinter event. It will be part of the Puaka Matariki celebrations coordinated by the Dunedin City Council and many of the presenters will be from the Maori community or will be people who have a relationship with te ao Maori.

The rising of Puaka (the star, Rigel) and Matariki (the constellation, Pleiades) marks the coming of the traditional Maori New Year.

As ever with Pecha Kucha Night there will be plenty of opportunity to mingle and talk with speakers and fellow audience members. There will be refreshments available for purchase. This particular event is held earlier than our usual time with a special price to encourage wider family participation. This event is for everyone!

Zerowaste Fashion

BY SENORITA AWESUMO
@ VOL 18 ON JUN 29, 2013

Senorita AweSUMO is Fiona Clements. Pakeha, Kai Tahu. Craftivist and Sustainable Fashion Practitioner.

She grew up in Waitati, Dunedin. Connected closely with nature and environmentally minded, her beliefs are reflected in my sustainable fashion design.

Senorita AweSUMO is her response to workplace related harm. Re-examination of her own beliefs and experience took her and Senorita AweSUMO into a new phase of life, growing a sustainable lifestyle, nurturing and nourishing the whole.

She believes that designers can serve their community by providing solutions to problems. Witnessing the amount of waste created in commercial fashion production, She set about creating a solution.

An opportunity to create unique garments and provide a local solution to a problem facing the fashion system globally.

Reducing waste without compromising style. Her designs aim to mitigate environmental harm from modern fashion production. Up cycled garments minimise impact to the environment from disposable consumer items.

Utilising a textile resource recovered from landfill, commercial off cuts, and recycling centres, adding value to otherwise discarded materials.

Senorita AweSUMO empowers ethical and conscious consumers with unique environmental fashion.

Encouraging conscious consumption by spreading awareness and giving an environmental choice in clothing.

Global problem, Local solution.
