The story of European secularism

PRESENTED ON FEB 06, 2017
IN MAASTRICHT @ VOL 32

Mueid Al Raee is interested in the connection of philosophy and religion. He talks about the influences that shaped Spinoza’s work on philosophy, religion, and understanding the nature of God.

Mueid presents Averroes as an important character in the story of secularism. Averroes is often referred to as the father of European Secularism. Mueid argues that religion played an important role in the formulation of the philosophy of secularism as we know it today in Europe.

His message is that we should challenge the ideas that consider secularism and religion as opposites.

The Myth of Perfection: Tolerance is a Matter of Plus or Minus, Choose Your Degree

BY ALEXANDRA P. SPAULDING
@ VOL 15 ON FEB 04, 2016

"You know there's no such thing as perfection, right?...If you can collectively make the imperfections work, you have perfection."

In The Myth of Perfection (Tolerance is a Matter of Plus or Minus, Choose Your Degree) from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 15, Buffalo-based artist and engineer Alexandra P. Spaulding reflects on her artistic practice, her love of minimalism, and her eventual acceptance of inevitable imperfections. Examining the notions of tolerance and how exacting to the millionth decimal point does not equal perfection, Spaulding focuses both on the visual arts (Minimalism), her own practice (aurally immersive installation art), engineering and manufacturing, and how the conflux of these three schools of thought have made her more accepting of 'the happy accident' and a better artist.

Unity in Diversity?

BY VERENA RIEDMILLER
@ VOL 32 ON FEB 06, 2017

As a young EU citizen who is convinced that there can only be a European solution to our present and future (political) challenges, Verena Riedmiller feels that Europeans need to stand up now for a more democratic Europe. A Europe, in which the voices of its diverse citizens are heard, a Europe, which does not only preach values but brings them to life.

Her proposal for such a Europe comes in the form of the NGO cube. Your take on Europe. Cube. educates, engages and empowers young people in Europe to voice their ideas for a Europe of the future towards the European Commission.

The EU is not a set political reality, each and every one of us can raise their voice and shape our political future!

Imagine what a Europe we could build together, if all future generations were enabled to explore and experience European cultural diversity and beauty first-hand. #FreeInterrail advocates for just that.
