The Art of Active Working Metaphors

BY RICH HAPTONSTALL
@ VOL 4 ON APR 05, 2018

To FVCC theatre professor Rich Haptonstall, set design is an "active working metaphor": not only does it have to be comparable and representative of real life, but it has to be a living, moving artform. As the three stories in this presentation demostrate, knowing how to use visual cues such as shape, color, and texture allow Haptonstall to illusrate the essence of the play and the characters therin.

Life In Plein Air

BY RICHIE CARTER
@ VOL 4 ON APR 05, 2018

Picture a jaunt through Europe, magic and beauty around on all sides. Beams of light hitting stately buildings in a way that they never will again. Walking past anchient cathedrals and the most treasured works of the old masters. And everywhere, every person has a story. No, it's not Fitzgerald or Hemingway. It is Richie Carter, whose uses plein-air painting to interact with people on a deeper, emotional level.

Discovering The Value of Graphic Design

BY ELMA GIAVASES
@ VOL 4 ON APR 05, 2018

It is no easy take to create art, to somehow materialize and express the thoughts in your head. Creating art expressing the thoughts in someone ELSE's head is something else entirely. Elma Giavases' early life and subsequent travels around the globe have given her a unique perspective on design and branding, and she now brings that expertise to the Kalispell community as a graphic designer with Highline Design.

After all, "great designs delight".

Costumes From Fit to Stage

BY SARAH BELL
@ VOL 4 ON APR 05, 2018

Research. Discovery. Literature. Creativity.

These are the factors that drive Sarah Bell, costume designer wth the Whitefish Theatre Company. At times, Sarah's skills need to be as various as her motivations. Costumes define characters. To discover that definition, it takes a talanted person with a creative vision, as well as someone who must often achieve feats of engineering to make that vision come to life,

Art Follows Life

BY TESSA HECK

Art can lead all over the place. It has led painter Tessa Heck from the rural to the urban (and back again), from the noncommercial to the monetary, from introspection to examination. Sometimes art is a journey and, as Tessa's story shows, sometimes that journey leads home. And sometimes it's a journey walked in red cowboy boots.
