Compassion for the Darkness

BY EMMY CHAHAL
@ VOL 2 ON OCT 24, 2018

Mental health can be considered an epidemic in North America - but are other countries more effective in providing care to those suffering? Emmy Chahal's talk is informed by her lived experience and personal research into international models that work more compassionately to see the humanity of each person facing mental health challenges. A new model of mental health will be discussed - one that honours the whole person. This new model is Emmy's vision of what mental health care could look like if we bridge the brilliance of the human mind with compassion for the darkness that most of us face at some point in our lives.

Sustainable Communities - Maintaining the Greater Good

BY VINCE REDA
@ VOL 2 ON OCT 24, 2018

The term Sustainable has been marketing many new developments over the past few years, around many of the lower mainland municipalities. Visions in the glossy brochures sell a healthy climate and environment that happily coincide with the everyday conveniences we have come to expect. However, densification with varying ideals brings challenges that slowly tarnish the green footprint. Ironically, a need is created for the constant maintenance of new landscapes, garbage, road infrastructure, runoff and excessive planning, in order to invigorate the perception of sustainability. In some cases, underlying impacts are affecting the natural course outside of these Communities. Vince Reda asks the audience to rethink the meaning of sustainability.
