PechaKucha Presentation

"Furnishing Eternity"

PRESENTED ON FEB 09, 2018
IN AKRON @ VOL 10

David Giffels grew up fascinated by his father’s dusty, tool-strewn workshop and the countless creations it inspired. So when he enlisted his eighty-one-year-old dad to help him build his own casket, he thought of it mostly as an opportunity to spend time together. But the unexpected deaths of his mother and, a year later, his best friend, coupled with the dawning realization that his father wouldn’t be around forever for such offbeat adventures—and neither would he—led to a harsh confrontation with mortality and loss.

During the presentation, Greg explain that year through the lens of a seven-year old (his age at the time) and how he came to understand the world in much more complicated terms, rather than black and white, good and bad, right and wrong. Many events that shaped Greg into the person he is today occurred during this year, including Darth Vader's defeat of the rebels, the constant appearing of the Ayatollah Khomeini on my television, JR Ewing's getting shot by someone, the death of John Lennon, and the death of my uncle, which his father was later found to be responsible for.

Your Brand Is Bullsh!t

BY KEVIN SMITH
@ VOL 10 ON FEB 09, 2018

All that glitters is not gold and this is never more true than in a day when online profiles, avatars, and "branding" has taken over how we package ourselves. While the world becomes obsessed with creating "personal brands," Kevin Smith argues that the true worth of a brand is in its dependability, and in order to achieve this, we have to understand our leverage points then double down on who we are.
