Director of Bands, Mooseheart School, Mooseheart Child City and School
Stephen Schmidt has been teaching instrumental music for over thirty years, the past 28 at Mooseheart, a residential facility for children whose families are unable, for a wide variety of reasons, to care for them. In 2011 he won the Mr. Holland’s Opus Award, presented in Carnegie Hall by Wynton Marsalis, for “having the passion, dedication and leadership skills to persevere under difficult circumstances and inspiring students and challenging them to attain the highest level of musicianship.” His passion is working with at risk young people and getting them to exceed beyond their perceived limitations. He and his wife have four children, three of them adopted. They are all proud Batavians, having lived in Batavia for over 25 years.
