El Segundo Barrio (Second Ward) is one of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso and is also known as the “other Ellis Island” because it has been the starting point for thousands of families immigrating from Mexico since the 1880’s. As an outreach Simon Chandler’s group began the Segundo Barrio Futbol Club to give the kids of the impoverished neighborhood an organized activity to participate in. An all volunteer staff now run five teams in the neighborhood in addition to after school programs to bring together physical activity and intellectual development.
