Building Motorcycles for One

BY MATTHEW ROBERTS
@ VOL 113 ON APR 30, 2014

Matthew Roberts, Creative Director at Speedtractor Industries, is part of a global movement to reestablish motorcycles as casual, cool forms of transportation, and he's doing it by creating beautiful, unique custom-made motorcycles for one client at a time. Matthew goes into depth on the new wave of motorcycle riders -- not the circus performers you see on TV -- a group of individuals looking to build something of their own, and take on new adventures on the road. Transformative Motorcycle Design

BY MATTHEW ROBERTS
@ PECHAKUCHA NIGHT SPECIAL @ AUTODESK POP-UP ON NOV 08, 2015

"The easiest way to describe what we do is like a two wheeled equivalent of the Eames LCW. We're looking for something that's timeless and embodies the essence of motorcycles."

Matthew Roberts of Speedtractor Industries, a custom motorcycle and design studio in Tokyo known from its elegant and personal custom creations, believes motorcycle design has finally come of age, to a place and time where people can appreciate the truest essence of motorcycling. Matthew discusses how a movement of bespoke design houses like his, offer riders and non-riders alike a glimpse of how a a new wave of contemporary design sense won't necessarily have to be rooted in a bygone time, nor will it likely loose it's mod look decades from now. An ultimately cool PechaKucha.

The Firefly

BY MATTHEW ROBERTS
@ VOL 137 ON JUN 29, 2016

"Please don’t ever look at a ramen delivery bike the same way again."

In The Firefly from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 137, Matthew Roberts shares how he reinvented the Honda Super Cub. With more units sold than any other motorised mode of transport in human history, accepting the challenge of creating a Honda Super Cub that would wow the world (and win a few races along the way) was a brave move indeed. Speedtractor Industries' Creative Director, Matthew Roberts, talks through the challenges, design journey and end results of hot-rodding this 49cc automotive icon.

Two Wheeled Tomorrow

BY MATTHEW ROBERTS
@ PECHAKUCHA NIGHT SPECIAL X MINI @ BMW GROUP TOKYO BAY ON JUL 20, 2016

"There aren't many things that have survived this sanitization and overly safety focused modern life like the motorcycle has."

In Two Wheeled Tomorrow from PechaKucha Night Special x MINI @ BMW Group Tokyo Bay, Matthew Roberts makes the case that raw, gritty, internal-combusting motorcycles are here to stay. Roberts argues that custom motorcycles are one of the last outlets for the human desire to be daring and adventurous.

The Roost Movie Project - Japan's Custom Moto Culture on Film

BY MATTHEW ROBERTS
@ VOL 149 ON JUL 26, 2017

Motorcycle builder and film producer Matthew Roberts (aka Speedtractor) lives, breathes and dreams custom motorcycles from his Tokyo based studio for some of the icons of the industry. In 2016 Roberts and his collaborators, Iceblock Films, decided the world needed its first feature length film exploring Japan's Alternative Custom Moto scene. Now, 10 months of filming, 6200kms and many, many lost races later, as the project enters its final phase, Roberts treats listeners with some behind the scenes glimpses of custom motorcycles as a lifestyle.
