Knit Designer/Creative Thinker
Maija Nygren is a Knit Designer originally from Finland, currently living in the Scottish Borders.
Maija graduated in 2016 from Heriot-Watt University with BA(Hons) in Design for Textiles. Previously Maija studied Costume construction at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School which led her onto a freelance career for over ten years in theatre.
In her theatre practice, Maija's focus was mainly with children's theatre, which seamlessly, during her design studies, led her onto specialising in knitted fabrics for kidswear.
What mostly inspires Maija is seeing the world from a child's point of view and aiming to estimate what sensation a fabric could awaken in a child. She regularly finds herself engrossed in a classic or contemporary children's book, just looking at the beautiful pictures.
Throughout her art and knitting practice, Maija explores the possibilities of producing attractive knitted fabrics and garments using local yarns and manufacturing.
