Bo Helliwell and Kim Smith

Principal, Helliwell + Smith • Blue Sky Architecture in West Vancouver Canada

Biography and Philosophy

Bo Helliwell (Architect AIBC, FRAIC) and Kim Smith (Architect AIBC, FRAIC, LEED AP) of Helliwell + Smith • Blue Sky Architecture have been based in West Vancouver since 1990. They have built works in the Lower Mainland, on the islands, mountains and valleys of British Columbia, as well as national and international projects. First established in 1975 as Blue Sky Design on Hornby Island, they have evolved a design approach that works poetically and economically with site, local materials, climate and program.

The drama, awe and inspiration in the western landscape challenges architecture to merge with the beauty of the geology and biology of the place. Blue Sky has built with an optimism embodying an emotional relationship between people, structure, materials and nature. There is an unashamed romanticism to Blue Sky’s approach to design that bonds buildings to their place.

Blue Sky’s architecture is a blend of our west coast modern heritage and organic architecture. Organic Architecture includes environmental concerns and also embodies the human spirit, transcending the mere act of shelter into something, which shapes and enhances our lives.
