Astrid Klein

Architect & PechaKucha Night Founder, Klein Dytham architecture in Tokyo Japan

Astrid Klein was born in Italy to German parents, schooled in France, educated in Britain, and since 1988 has lived and worked in Japan. She is, therefore, thoroughly international, right down to her bones. Traversing disciplinary and cultural boundaries has been a way of life for Astrid. An artistic family background has ballasted her sense of identity, while the compass of design has guided her professional career.

A Masters degree from the Royal College of Art in London exposed her to the diversity of creative endeavor and developed her talent. A thirst for the exotic led her to Japan, a hunger for the new kept her there. After working for Toyo Ito in Tokyo, she and her partner Mark Dytham established KDa in 1991.

The work of KDa has been the subject of numerous publications and an exhibition of their work was held at the Architecture Association in London in 2005. Astrid is a frequent guest at international conferences on design and architecture and has lectured or held teaching positions at universities in Japan, the UK, the USA, Australia and throughout Europe.

PechaKucha Inspires Nepal

BY MARK DYTHAM
@ VOL 126 ON JUN 24, 2015

"Anybody who has a story to share about Nepal can make a presentation, record it, send it to us, and we can put it on our PechaKucha Inspire Channel."

At PechaKucha Tokyo's Vol. 126, co-founders Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein re-launched their disaster response initiative, "PechaKucha Inspire", this time for the heavily earthquake-hit Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal.

Building on their experiences with the ongoing PechaKucha Inspire JAPAN effort, where an ever-growing collection of Japan inspiring presentations made at PKN around the world, are being added to, shared, and viewed nearly 100,000 times through the PechaKucha website, PechaKucha Inspire NEPAL will be more nimble, allowing anyone to make a presentation and send it directly to us to upload on the Inspire NEPAL Channel.

PechaKucha's simple and accessible format combined with a tried and tested worldwide network of creativity proves again how we can rally together to truly make a difference in the world. Be inspired by this compelling presentation to share YOUR story and in turn inspire Nepal back to it's beautiful self!

To share your story, send us a mail at inspire@pechakucha.org.

Thank you!

This was "Presentation of the Day" on July 1st, 2015.

From Tokyo to the World

BY ASTRID KLEIN
@ VOL 55 ON FEB 09, 2016

Astrid Klein & Mark Dytham, PechaKucha Founders, special guests from PechaKucha HQ, Tokyo

Mark and Astrid introduce the concept of PechaKucha  - in ten years this format of seminars has spread to over 900 cities. They have about 120 events every month, and around 500 000 people attend these events.

PechaKucha is about being positive. Mark and Astrid speak about the positive outcome of the horrible earthquake in Tōhoku in 2011, where a million people were dislodged and 7000 people lost their homes. To help restore the community, architect Toyo Ito built a new kind of community center called The Home For All – a place where people can meet each other, a place to hang out and a place for kids to play.
