Rodney Hill, Architect and professor, discusses the results of many years of sculpting. From unintended opportunities that opened while covering design gaps in the architecture offices he worked for, he discovered a path that led from welding to wood to bronze as an avocation. He shared his large scale, very intricate wood carvings, some with erotic affordances requested by clients.

Family Boatbuilding, Getting Kids on the Water with Their Own Hands

Tom Hurst has been a woodworking and natural resources teacher for a good long while. He has built and guided the creation of many items of furniture, art pieces, toys, buildings and of course boats. He has built sailboats, canoes and sea kayaks with audiences from children to seniors both locally and around the US. Over 100 canoes and kayaks grace our local waters that were built in his shops. Family boatbuilding is still his favorite. It is a project to draw together people and get them on the water. A natural teacher with a love of sharing the outdoors and practical skills, He has a passion for hands-on experiential education.

Our next Pecha Kucha Night is a big one--#20! To celebrate, we will be displaying creative works with the theme of (what else?) 20! Do you know someone creative? We're looking for creative works in any media! Please check out the details below. One piece with the theme of "20" Any type of art or craft that is family-friendly Contact PKN Bemidji's Creative Showcase Coordinator (hastigjm@hotmail.com) or message Pecha Kucha Bemidji on Facebook if you're interested in participating. Email us a photo/description of your piece by November 15th Anyone can submit a creative work. You do not have to consider yourself an artist or have any sort of credentials. This is just a fun way to show off the creativity in our community. PKN #20 is on December 5th at 6:30pm at the Sanford Center. Lake Michigan in a Dugout Canoe

"That not how most people build boats these days but I figured I was new to woodworking, logs float no matter what, and I was committed." In Lake Michigan in a Dugout Canoe from PechaKucha Night St. Joseph Vol. 1, Mary Catterlin and and Amy Lukas share their story of how, in the summer of 2012, they circumnavigated Lake Michigan in their handmade dugout sailing canoe. After 93 days and 1200 miles, they returned home to the beach of Beverly Shores, Indiana. This adventure has led to the creation of a self produced documentary and a published illustrated journal.
