Redesign a School

Architect Pascale Sablan is sharing her experience promoting diversity and including children in the design process of redesigning a school in Haiti after the earthquake. Following the international building code in the design she is also quantifying the sustainability of the product and encouraging the audience to share their passion and knowledge with children.

In Realizing Good Ideas from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 14, Chris Siano shares how he uses digital design and fabricatio to make things better, whether it is a public art installation, a student sculpture project, a building or a neighborhood. For the past twelve years he has served as an Instructional Support Technician in the University at Buffalo Department of Art. In 2005 he formed The Foundry Group Inc. - a company specializing in art and architectural fabrication. And in 2012, in partnership with his brother Matthew, he formed HES Properties - a real estate development company focusing on development of mixed-use properties on Buffalo's West Side. All of these endevours are conduits for great ideas in his community to come to fruition.

It is easy to grasp the concept that communication is a two-way street but how many of us really put the theory into practice? How easily do we fall on the default of just trying to put our point across, specially if we think about education?
Mark Kawakami is passionate about teaching and also describes himself as a failed comedian. In The Teacher Who Learned to Listen from PechaKucha Night Maastricht Vol. 31, he shared what conclusion he came to over the years of teaching.

Mehdi Doumi is from Algeria and England, studied biomedical engineering, and is a technical leader in Research and Innovation at L’Oreal USA - researching human perception of cosmetic products. He has been part of NPO Ligo Project, promoting science in U.S. culture through humor and videography. He also enjoys carpentry, improv, and drawing satirical cartoons. Over the last 4 years he has committed himself to creating abstract artwork to any K-12 educator across the USA. He hopes that each art piece stimulates student curiosity about math and science topics, especially in a challenging teaching environment.

Reexamining an Abandoned Amusement Park, Teaching Kids How to Deal with Disabilities, and Guerilla Projecting in Providence
Presentations A presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 15) by Anthony Spinello and Augustina Woodgate about a project in Berlin called Kulturpark, taking place in an abandoned amusement park. Here's more on the project from the official website:In the Treptower Park forest in East Berlin, along the Spreeriver, there is an abandoned amusement park. The park, originally called Kulturpark Planterwald, was built in 1969 by the GDR and was a rare site for Soviet amusement and attraction. After the fall of the wall, the park became the family-owned Spreepark and suffered challenges of access, attendance, and economy. In 2001, the park closed from capital collapse. Ever since, visitors have regularly traversed the fence to explore this jungle of broken thrill machines. In June 2012, Kulturpark will explore the poetics and potential of these recent ruins, building upon the unique energy of Berlin’s urban, social, cultural, and political landscapes.Marina Potanina is the president of a charity foundation called To Kids About Kids. In her presentation (in Russian, from PKN Moscow Vol. 12) she talks about the project, and the creation of an animated series about school life for a group of kids, with one of the main characters being a girl in a wheelchair. In Russia, there are no books, TV, or other examples of adequate communication with people with disabilities. Marina believes that if we start by talking to kids about these issues, that our society will be changed. Landscapes in Australia (and Beyond), the Mississippi Goddam Play, and Teaching Kids Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship
Presentations Christian Fletcher is a landscape photographer who photographs not only the beautiful South West of Australia but is now expanding his portfolio to include the rest of Australia and locations around the world. His presentation (from PKN Dunsborough Vol. 5) covers a new photography collaboration, exhibition, and workshop that is coming up in the near future. How did Jonathan Norton get out of writing a 20-page assignment? He promised a 100-page play instead, based on the Nina Simone song "Mississippi Goddam." Here's the story (from PKN Dallas Vol. 10). As we find out in this presentation (in Ukrainian, from PKN Kyiv Vol. 9), Kids-Coins is an educational project -- held inside and outside school -- that teaches children and teenagers the basics of financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Sergey Bidenko and Irina Zolotarevych -- co-authors of the "Kids-Coins" projects -- are experienced business coaches who have implemented 37 training and educational programs for adults and youth. Preply — Innovative Method of Learning
Kirill Bigai, Co-Founder/CEO Preply, introduced in his presentation from PKN Dnipropetrovsk IT::Start-up Vol. 9 a startup online platform Preply. This is an innovative method of learning English with the help of online technologies. You can choose a tutor at any point on the globe, and the sessions can be conducted using Skype.
Tokyo in Sketches
"The city, I think, has started to influence my drawing already -- it's become more painterly..." In today's Presentation of the Day, "Tokyo in Sketches" from PKN Tokyo Vol. 108, fervent illustrator Adrian Hogan speaks of his passion. While teaching in the northernmost tip of Japan's Honshu island, Adrian developed a habit of sketching anyone he saw -- most especially his energetic students. Here he discusses the evolution of his skill, and how he's transitioned from Aomori-bound instructor to freelance illustrator living in Tokyo.
Using the Format at Conferences
The PechaKucha format goes beyond regular PechaKucha Nights, and we are often contacted about having one-off PechaKucha sessions as part of conferences or festivals, which we call "Powered by PechaKucha" events. Here's one planned for the Werklund School of Education's IDEAS: Rising to the Challenge conference in Calgary. This spring, a conference focusing on education innovation will be held on campus, and PechaKucha will figure prominently in the program. The conference, called IDEAS: Rising to the Challenge, will focus on creating opportunities for participants to inform each other’s work, to build on ideas and to challenge the ideas of learning and teaching. According to Brenda Gladstone, co-chair of the conference and Chief Operating Officer of the Galileo Educational Network, the two-day event is for innovators, designers, educators, academics, researchers and students (hence the acronym IDEAS). “Participants will build new knowledge networks,” says Gladstone. “These networks will focus on scholarship for teaching, in which research informs teaching and leading practices, and leading edge practices from the field inform research.” Read the rest of the article.

Viviana De Loera challenges architects, builders, and designers to compare the virtual “templates” designed by for-profit companies like Google and Facebook to the frenzied condo living, boxed dwellings, and office spaces we exist in every day.
