The Joseph School in Haiti

James Kennon speaks about his work with The Joseph School in Haiti. On the island of Haiti of the 9.2 million people, 80% live below the International Poverty Line equating to 7.4 million people with an average income of less than $2 per day. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. The most impactful way to help Haiti is to empower them to help themselves. Leadership changes everything.
Redesign a School

Architect Pascale Sablan is sharing her experience promoting diversity and including children in the design process of redesigning a school in Haiti after the earthquake. Following the international building code in the design she is also quantifying the sustainability of the product and encouraging the audience to share their passion and knowledge with children.

Providing hope to children in the Gambia

For Mariëlle Daemen, starting a foundation had been a dream ever since she visited the Gambia for the first time. Back then, she witnessed poverty and many children not being able to go to school. This led her to co-found the Kids2School Foundation.
Starting from the principle that education is a basic right for every child in the world, Kids2School is trying to give more children in the Gambia access to education. Children who out of poverty would never have a chance to go to school and as such could never hope for a better future for them and their family. For the sponsors of the children, the foundation provides a very direct, one-on-one opportunity to contribute to a better world as well.

PKN Edmonton Kicks It Old School
PechaKucha Night in Edmonton Vol. 5 is coming up in a few short weeks (October 2), and it's going "old school." More than break-beats and tube-socks, PECHA KUCHA NIGHT 5 (PKN 5) explores "OLD SCHOOL" with 10 presentations focusing on looking back and pushing forward in the areas of design, urban-planning, art, and sustainability. In addition to provocative ideas and lively presentations, PKN5 features a cash bar, sweet treats, and tunes provided by DJ Aaron Levin from Weird Canada and CJSR. The event is being held as part of the University of Alberta's Alumni Week.

Today - 20 days later - it gives us great pride in announcing that the PechaKucha global network of cities, organizers, presenters and fans has raised over $60,000 which allows Architecture For Humanity to build the first PechaKucha School in Haiti.

Later this month (October 23), PechaKucha Night in Chicago is teaming up with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for a special PechaKucha event. Here's more from PKN Chicago organizer Peter Exley: Since PK began in Chicago, one of the most fertile sources of presenters and supporters seems to have been the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Recognizing this, PKN Chicago is organizing a special PK event to coincide with this year's parents weekend. So Moms, Mums, and Dads from around the world converging on Chicago with their offspring attending SAIC will discover PK, and be on the lookout for it back home in their cities. And a new crop of young creatives will get their first taste of PK. We're very excited to be doing this with the [Art Insti] "tute." The poster for the event was designed by Eric Baskauskas.
Our First School!
During the "PechaKucha Day for Haiti," we were able to raise $80,000 for Architecture for Humanity. Their work went into high gear in 2011, and we were extremely proud to see the construction of the school, École La Dignité, that PechaKucha funded along with the Stiller Foundation -- it opened on November 7, 2011. Thank you everyone who supported PechaKucha for Haiti and a massive thank you to Cameron Sinclair and his team for making the school a reality.

On the 20th of February 2010, the 7th anniversary of PechaKucha Night, 117 cities came together on a single day and held events across the globe to support Architecture for Humanity's plans for rebuilding in Haiti. Other PechaKucha events for Haiti during February took this total to 174, and with cities still holding PKN events for Haiti in March this total topped 200. Today -- 20 days later -- it gives us great pride in announcing that the PechaKucha global network of cities, organizers, presenters and fans has raised over $60,000 which allows Architecture For Humanity to build the first PechaKucha School in Haiti. This just in from Architecture for Humanity's Cameron Sinclair: Our team arrived in Haiti last week, and we will know more about specific costs in the next few weeks. Our preliminary estimates for school costs are:Basic Costs Main Teaching Blocks (3) $30,000Toilet Block (1) $5,000Cafeteria $15,000Teachers Room $5,000 Landscaping/Reforestation $5,000 Total: $60,000 We will know more about volunteer needs also in the next few weeks but probably won't have volunteers there until the summer or later, so we will keep you posted on this. PechaKucha in the Classroom
At Tokyo's Vol. 100, held back in February of this year, a school teacher named Tomoko Koda was in attendance, and loved the presentation "The World's Best City When It Rains" by Jesper Larsson so much that she contacted him afterwards, asking if he could come to the school where she works (KAIS) to do a workshop with her students based on that presentation. He couldn't make it before leaving the country (he was in town on a visit), but he encouraged them to do it anyway. And so they did. We later contacted Tomoko, and she had this to say: "It was our first attempt to have a PechaKucha event at our school, and the students exceeded my expectation -- it was a huge success! Everyone talked about what they are passionate about (skateboard, basketball, computer games), their new ideas (new style of alarm clocks, creative game to get a seat on a crowded train), and new perspectives (see the positive side of moving, online activities). Students got to learn their friends' ideas and shared opinions. We had so much fun and hope to have it every year!" We've invited Tomoko to come present at one of our upcoming PKNs in Tokyo, and we can't wait to hear her talk about this experience of using the PK format with her students.

Dmitry Tkachenko, managing partner at SMM Group in Kiev, from PKN Dnipropetrovsk IT::Education «E-Learning for Customer Training on the Example of SMM-school" emphasizes on the acute shortage of specialists in this field, the inefficient use of social networks. One of the problems of specialists is "zero knowledge". Dmitry in his presentation shows all pros and cons of distance learning.
PKN at Rail River Folk School!
Pecha Kucha Bemidji is excited to be part of Sustainable Tuesday at Rail River Folk School on June 23rd! The format is the same--each speaker will have 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide for a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds--and the topics are still delightfully diverse. We have 10 presentations lined up for you as well as some fun activities for intermission. Everyone is welcome! Take a look at who will be speaking. You won't want to miss this one! Redesign a School
"Imagine my excitement when I was asked to redesign a school that had collapsed in the earthquake. I was able to combine both of my passions: mentoring and helping to design for Haiti's future." In Redesign a School from Brooklyn, Vol. 4, Architect and ace mentor, Pascale Sablan shares her experience promoting diversity and including children in the design process of redesigning a school in Haiti after the earthquake. Emphasizing conceptual design to her students and following the international building code in the design she quantifies the sustainability of the project and encourages the audience to share their professions, passion, and knowledge with children because as she lastly adds, "you will not only will you definitely change their world, they will definitely change your world."
Another successful edition of PechaKucha at Maastricht School of Management
“PechaKucha teaches us four important skills in management,” said Oliver Olson, director of Global Education, as he opened the fourth annual edition of MSM goes PechaKucha on Friday 17 March. “1. Following rules, 2. Being concise, 3. Public speaking, 4. Improvisation” Its strict format – 20 slides, 20 second per slide – forces you to think carefully about your message and to stay focused. At the same time, it allows you to practice your presentation and public speaking skills, and develop perhaps the most important one, which will help you throughout life in any situation, the skill of improvisation.” Stimulated by these encouraging words, no less than 11 MBA and MM students took the PechaKucha stage at MSM in front of a full audience of staff, students, friends, family members and MSM stakeholders. As always at MSM, their stories came from all over world, from Kenya to Peru, from Greece to Vietnam, from India to Chile and more. The students talked about topics that mattered to them and transformed the way they saw the world and the future, and the common point between all their stories was that although personal, they all had a deeper and universal value and meaning. We heard about what we can learn from observing birds in a city like Lima, how the financial crisis in Greece led to the development of new business ideas, why we should thank our enemies, the power of relationships, a successful financial product made in Kenya, and why education and life-long learning are key to making the world a better place. T The PechaKucha team in Maastricht complimented the students on their excellent choice of topics and slides. The strength of the PechaKucha format lies in the combination of an authentic message and powerful images. The presenters scored high on these points, whilst keep their own presentation and delivery style. Some used humor, others metaphors, some walked up and down the stage, others asked questions to the audience. The dynamic and engaging pace of the presentations lifted everyone’s spirits on this Friday afternoon. The event, perfectly organized by Pilar Gonzalez, ended – how else? – with a brilliant improvisation on random slides by Oliver Olson himself, who took the PechaKucha standards to yet a higher presentation level under huge laughter and applause from the public.
