Wooden Handle

Alex Mowat presents his product of wooden handles for public toilets, and be easy to use for those who need them. Taking many into account who will need assistance to be able to go to the bathroom, wooden handles are much more friendlier than your common ice cold steal handle bars. From the type of wood, to how it should be shaped, and using disinfectant oil on the wood itself, is all thought out. Insuring a safe and comfortable expeirence to everyone who uses them.

Sexy and Community

Kate Malone and Stephen Pey worked together to create a building with hand made glazed tiles and design. After many trials and errors of cracking ceramic tiles, the finished product was to make something sexy but have the sense of community in the finished building. Which makes the hard work all worth while.

Exhibition "Design Ah!" Channel

PechaKucha teamed up with 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT as part of the "Design Ah!" exhibition to produce two special events on March 23rd. One for kids, where they made and presented their 20x20s in an open workshop. The other for 'grown-ups' was part of Roppongi Art Night, and featured an inspiring lineup of design talent.

Tega Brain is an artist and engineer. She makes eccentric engineering, reimagining everyday technologies to address their politics and envision alternatives. She is currently a resident at Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology, Brooklyn, has both studied and taught at the School for Poetic Computation, and is an Assistant Professor at SUNY Purchase. 

Surya Mattu is an artist and engineer based in Brooklyn. He is currently a fellow at Data&Society where he is investigating infrastructure with a focus on wireless as a way to better understand bias in technology. He is also a contributing researcher at ProPublica. Previously he has worked as an engineer at Bell Labs and is a graduate from the New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. He has a degree in Electronics and Telecommunication from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.

Nelle mie nike ci sono migliaia di fori. Sono utili a permettere la traspirazione, una maggiore leggerezza, un forte   design ed identità.
Questa materia forata non è altro che un tessuto, definito da trama ed ordito, pieni e vuoti in rigoroso rapporto .
Al variare della percentuale e della dimensione del foro varia la funzione ed il contesto. Il foro  è sapienza produttiva, rappresenta, nell’assenza di materia, la capacità di utilizzare solo la quantità di materiale utile allo scopo. Attraverso un foro si può guardare  lo spazio , la città o il mare. Le tensioni si distribuiscono meglio attraverso di esso .
Un foro  o meglio in questo caso  una moltituidine di fori sono progetto che esce dalla fabbrica  per guardarvi attraverso.

karak ist ein Ornament. karak ist auch die Firma von Sebastian Rauch und Thomas Rösler. Gemeinsam mit Sebastians Mutter, der Keramikkünstlerin Martha Rauch, produzieren die beiden Designer in Handarbeit Keramikfliesen mit grafischen Mustern. Seine digitalen Muster würden erst durch die Fehler, Risse und Flecken, die durch den Rakkubrand entstünden, lebendig, so der Grafikdesigner Sebastian. Thomas Rösler ist Produktdesigner und auch ihn fasziniert der unkontrollierbare Prozess. Jede Fliese wird anders, ganz besonders. www.karak.at

In Universal Design from PechaKucha Buffalo Vol. 18, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Director of the IDeA Center in Buffalo, NY, Edward Steinfeld, ArchD, AIA, provides an overview of how the built environment affects access. The University at Buffalo's Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDeA Center) is dedicated to making environments and products more usable, safer and healthier in response to the needs of an increasingly diverse population. The IDeA Center’s activities are based on the philosophy of Inclusive Design, often called “Universal Design” or “Design for All.” It is a way of thinking that can be applied in any design activity, business practice, program or service involving interaction of people with the physical, social or virtual worlds.

Heineken Open Design Explorations - The Designers

As we covered in recent months, the Heineken Open Design Explorations competition was held in four cities (Tokyo, New York, Milan, and Sao Paulo) to chose a team of designers through PechaKucha events, with the goal of producing a temporary club space at next year's Milano Salone. Computer Graphic Character Design

In "Computer Graphic Character Design," a group of students (Reibe Studios) from computer science and fine arts departments share with us the methodologies they apply to the creation of characters in computer graphic design, and how they produced two short films. In this edition of Presentation of the Day (from the special PechaKucha x Design Ah! exhibition) Makoto Orisaki emphasizes the importance of the line. He makes a point to demonstrate how even the simplest, smallest adjustments in a design can fundamentally change the way a product is used or interacted with.

The Charm of Simple Design

In this case, simple design is cool, refreshing, and goes down smooth. In today's Presentation of the Day, "The Charm of Simple Design" from a special Tokyo Designers Week 2013 edition of PKN Tokyo Vol. 107, product designer Keita Suzuki shows off some of his stunning and clean product designs. Among his works are a glass that looks like Mt. Fuji when filled with beer, a soap dish that doubles as a bubble maker, and a wind chime that looks like a bubble floating in mid-air. He's also been working with the Kingdom of Bhutan to develop culturally influenced products that could be used in the citizens' everyday lives.
