Inspirational Coincidences

BY RACHEL MASON
@ VOL 2 ON OCT 16, 2014

Rachel Mason talks, sings, and strums about the place where art and life, or fiction and reality meet... While doing research for a musical performance and rock opera to get inside the mind of a child killer from the 1930's, she made contact with a man who killed and dismembered a boy in Borough Park. The experience profoundly effected her, and inspired her to write an opera incidentally about a coincidence - two men with the same name Hamilton Fish, died a day apart and their deaths were announced on a single front page. One man was a child-killing sadist, the other a politician from a distinguished political family.

Site-Based Performance: Development of a Process

BY DAN SHANAHAN
@ VOL 17 ON SEP 15, 2016

“We devised a few rules: Start with the architecture. Consider its history. Draw from its mythology.”

In Site-Based Performance: Development of a Process from PechaKucha Buffalo Vol. 17, Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Torn Space Theatre in Buffalo, NY, Dan Shanahan, reveals Torn Space's process of developing site-based performance. Drawing from over 10 years of experience and eight original pieces for non-traditional performance venues, Shanahan addresses the influences, aesthetics, and rules for Torn Space's site-based performances. As The Buffalo News said of Torn Space’s work, the productions “force viewers to rethink and expand their own ideas of what theater or performance can be." Torn Space Theatre was co-founded by Melissa Meola Shanahan.

Kovacs Gerzson Peter

PechaKucha Night in Budapest Vol. 14 was held back in September, and that city's organizer, Attila Bujdoso, fills us in on a special performance that was done in between the presentations by dancer, choreographer, and stage designer Kovacs Gerzson Peter. So PechaKucha Night in Budapest Vol.14 event was held in Trafó theatre. We took the advantages of the space since all the equipment was already installed and available for use. Kovács Gerzson Péter, contemporary dancer, coreographer and stage designer showed not 20 slides but 20 stage scenes instead, supported by the life set of DJ Csodafarkas (Tilos). The audience, who was seated on the stage opposing the presenters who were standing on the amphitheatre steps, was the target of the lighting so the visitors became the actors of the scenes themselves. Below, a few more photos from the performance -- there's more to see in this Flickr photoset.

Performance Arcade Session 2013

We're revving up for our first PKN session of 2013 with our annualoutdoors Performance Arcade Session in collaboration with the Playground (NZ Ltd) http://theplaygroundnz.com/ The Arcade venue comprises a series of containers featuring installations, performance art, live music, and works that travel through, or occupy spaces along the stunning Wellington Waterfront.  We're looking to feature our surprise presenters spot first trialled at our final session of 2012 - 5 people who volunteer on the spot to talk to images they've never seen before.   This proved to be one of the highlights of the October 2012 session.   Our brave presenters were all  from overseas - Russia, New York, Sweden, Chile and Germany.  New Zealanders were far too shy for the challenge.  We definitely need to have this presentation after the beer break  - not before - so more people can pluck up some 'Dutch courage' aided and abetted by the delights of the Performance Arcade bar!   The PKN Welly and Playground NZ crews are crossing fingers and toes for a fine and warm evening
