The Pictures in the Hall
BY DOUG SMITH
@ VOL 3
ON OCT 26, 2011
"He was introducing the Ziggy Stardust persona. It was obvious to everybody that it was going to be absolutely massive. I remember being aware that I was witnessing something special, the emergence of a star."
In The Pictures in the Hallway, from PechaKucha Night Derby Vol. 3, Doug Smith shares an absolutely amazing PechaKucha about photos taken in London 40 years ago, of rock legends of a phenomenal era of music. Photos of Bowie, Eno, Dury, and others now gracing his hallway in Derby, an ultimately cool testament of Smith's love for music.
This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on November 2nd, 2013 and again on January 14th, 2015 following the passing of David Bowie.

From rugby to social empowerment in Romania
BY LUCIAN MIRCESCU
@ VOL 26
ON APR 09, 2015
Lucian Mircescu is actively involved in development matters in Romania. A few years ago, he launched the Rugby Club Aurora Baicoi Foundation, which he is using now as a social development platform.
Last year he organised the club's first summer school, where he spent one week with children from 8-14, teaching them maths and English with Duolingo and the Khan Academy.
It's a project that is gaining more and more attention. His story can be one of social empowerment and community participation in the context of the Romanian migration taking place after the country gained European Union membership.
Some of the children in the club simply grow up without any parents, who are working abroad. The children are rarely encouraged to focus on their education and to pursue careers that require studying - which only repeats an eventual poverty cycle.

Another non-English presentation -- from PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 72 -- but this time it's really all about the visuals (although English translations commenting on the images are included). So sit back and let photographer MOMO answer the question, "Is something hiding in their somewhere?"
We close off the week with a misunderstood friend from the sea. At last week's PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 73, PangeaSeed's Aaron Glasson, Tre Packard, and Mayumi Takeda showed us just how important it is to preserve and protect sharks and their habitat.
Chris Kirkland runs an art-related online business (Art Web), but even more interesting are the gravity defying poses that he tends to strike when he's out and about -- and we're talking out and about on a global level. "Headstanding" was recorded at PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 90, and is in English and Japanese.

English = Time + Tenacity + Tears
“English is a frankenstein's monster. It's a hodgepodge abomination of rules that we break all the time.” In English = Time + Tenacity + Tears from PechaKucha Night Tokyo’s 133rd Volume, student and literary enthusiast Ṣeyi Adebanjo, discusses her frustration with the “global language”. The real world is full of puzzles, all of which are more or less systematic. To her the English language itself is the most complex puzzle of all. Though she found learning the convoluted language to be a challenge, her tenacity as both a bibliophile and writer eventually paid off; the end product was worth it.
