"Powered by PechaKucha" events are one-off events that are separate from regular city-based PechaKucha Nights, and that are usually held as part of festivals and conferences, but can also act as standalone events. These events include presentations that use the PechaKucha 20 images x 20 seconds format.

Dear Hunter

BY REMY KROESE
@ VOL 24 ON DEC 09, 2014

The 'Dear Hunter' are architects, but they are different from any other architect office. They're not striving for buildings: they're after the experience of people like you and me, regarding our surroundings. Their philosophy is based on techniques of the hunt.

Hunting transforms all our senses and makes us extremely aware of our surroundings. Through various hunting techniques they don’t hunt deer, but the dearest thing to man: subjective values within the human environment, personals spatial experiences and perception. They gather this information to use it in the fields of architecture, design and urban planning.

New York: City on a Grid

BY GERARD KOEPPEL
@ VOL 7 ON DEC 04, 2015

Actor David Duchovny (!) says of Gerard Koeppel's new book: “ I’ve spent most of my life walking the straight lines of the world’s greatest city, and have never thought to ask: Is this a different shape from other cities, and if so, why, and who did it? Koeppel’s book answers these questions, in an easygoing, good-humored manner, with interesting facts unearthed on nearly every page. This is one of those books you always wished would be written, and here it is. Indispensable for anyone interested in the history of New York and cities generally, and bound to fuel cocktail conversations up, down, and across the city for years to come.”

Listen here for a whirlwind history of NY's grid as it develops!

Gerard Koeppel writes history, mostly New York related, but also in anything from magazines and journals to historical signage in city parks. He was also a captain of a charter sailboat, an awful law student, a licensed hack (out of a Greenwich Village taxi garage), and then, for many years, a radio reporter/writer/editor/producer, mostly with CBS News.

The Magic Lantern

BY DAVID DEPREZ
@ VOL 31 ON SEP 07, 2016

"It is so important that as a student you go out of your comfort zone, out of the faculty, out of your student house - because its the only way to connect to the city."

What is 'cinema' all about and how can 'a cinema' canbe a natural intersection for informal learning and entertainment, for art and science, for students and city?

In "The Magic Lantern" from PechaKucha Night Maastricht Vol. 31David Deprez addresses these questions. As an artistic director of Lumière Cinema Maastricht, David plans to involve students in the programming and using films in their academic curricula at Maasstricht University.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Thursday, September 29th.

Kid in the City

As our final "Presentation of the Day" for the week -- and to kick off the weekend -- we hear from Sarkis Ghanaghounian (AKA Sako) who shares how he, as a city kid, loves growing up in a city and all the cool stuff he gets to experience. The presentation is in response to local politician Doug Holyday's recent comment about how Toronto is not the ideal city to raise children.

Symphonies of the City

From the cacophonous cries of the city springs forth a mellifluous mini-musicale. In today's Presentation of the Day, "Symphonies of the City" from PKN Toronto Vol. 25, designer Marc De Pape is "exploring the relationship between sensing technology and the routines of everyday life." He's created a device that he compares to a windchime: one that not only creates sounds with the wind, but senses audio, motion, direction, temperature, light, and more. Based on the sensory input of the city, the device generates a melodious micro-orchestra of sounds that are not at all displeasing to the ear. Give it a listen on Marc's project page.
